I talked to a guy who really knows his shit, has been putting mod motors together for some time. i was picking his brain about my upcoming build. he said not to do a high volume oil pump because of how the lifters wont release the pressure quick enough, they will get too pumped up and he said they troubleshot a motor one time that kept having a bad miss, it was becuase of the lifter getting too high oil pressure. anyone else know of these issues at all,i have a new ford racing oil pump showing up next week.just curious on who is using the high volume pump with/without issues.

Best that I recall, all the supposed "high volume" aftermarket oil pumps were actually lower flow than the stock one. People found that out the hard way several years ago.

The GT500 oil pump is the oil pump you want. The stock GT pumps are garbage, just ask Ron and a few others. The GT500 pump is the best replacement at this time.:thumb:

So if the stock pump is "garbage", then the GT500 pump is "garbage" that has been inspected. Physically, there is no difference between the pumps. The GT500 pumps get additional inspections over the base GT pumps, but they are the exact same pump off the exact same line.

The gt oil pump and gt500 oil pump ARE NOT THE SAME! This has been covered multiple times! Put the two side by side, not the same casting numbers, part numbers, NOT THE SAME!

Straight from Ford Racing Parts.

Fits 2005-09 Mustang 4.6L and 2007-09 SVT Mustang 5.4L
Stock replacement for 2007-09 SVT Mustang 5.4L
Highest volume and pressure production pump available for modular engines - 20 percent higher flow rate than a stock 4.6L 3V
Recommended for applications requiring higher volume and pressure
Pump can be used with 3V and 4V pickup tubes

Anyone have any good, close up picks of the gears from these two pumps side by side? Are the gears on the GT500 pump thicker than the Gt pumps? Do they have a different tooth pattern? Are the gears larger in diameter? If they put out 20% more volume, then they better have gears that are 20% thicker to get that oil volume.

The reason I ask is I have seen any number of threads stating that they are the same thing with better inspections for the GT500 pump. I really don't care what part number Ford Racing uses as they quite often have different part numbers for the same item just because they are Ford Racing. Heck, even if they where just different because of the additional inspections they would STILL have different part numbers so Ford can track them.

So, does anyone have the photos or other evidence to prove this?

And a few quotes I found on this web site while searching:

From Andy at Livernois:
The GT500 pump is identical save for going through a tighter inspection... So if it's an issue with the quality of the gears (which it's not) the GT500 pump would have the same issue...

From Androdz (same basic quote found in several different threads):
Should change the oil pump while you are at it, it is like $70 more, get the gt500 one, it is the same as the gt one but it passes thru a "white glove" inspection.

What I didn't find after searching for "GT500 oil pump" is one single quote where someone challenged the notion that the GT500 pump was anything other than a better inspected stock pump, other than this thread. It might be something that was argued about a long time ago and only current threads are being returned in the search, who knows.

Maybe I'm not searching for the right words to find it, but I would appreciate it if either of you gents could post a few links to the threads where the true differences on the GT500 oil pump is discussed. Preferably with threads that have a bit of actual proof in them.

I also did some general google searching, but all I found was a few threads on different forums that were basically one camp saying "stock with inspections!" and another camp "saying better!!", but neither side showing anything to prove their point. Other than the Ford Racing pump ad, of course.

I'm never taking the word of Androdz without looking into it first. I'm sorry, but ford is not going to produce the exact same pump with different numbers. Ford website states the 20% increase, so I'd hope it was right for the sake of the people that are buying them.

UPDATE!! I owe RRRoamer a big apology...kinda. We were somewhat both right. I was right that they are NOT the same pump, but the stock pump is the better one. Here's the details. Called Ford and talked to a tech, they didn't know it, but the information on the website is incorrect. The 4.6 3v oil pump has the highest oil flow. The 5.4 pump is 20% less volume, not more because the 3V has to have more for the VCT. I told him about the issues of the pumps failing because of the gears and he informed me that someone is making billet gears for the stock pump, and that is the best way to go on our motors. So there you have it, oil pump mystery solved.:thumb:

Also, he said they are changing the website immediately.
