So, I have been thinking abouts cams. I am being cheap and lazy so I am probably going NSR. My question is for those with the Stage 1 BBR's. The BBR John guy on these forums says that they are NSR and DO NOT require springs in a few threads I found during my research. It appears that there isn't a lot of folks that run BBR cams, therefore concrete info is hard to come by.

Now, if you look at the Stage 1 cams on BBR's site, they say "Recommend Replacing Valve Spring". I see that they use a .480" lift where as most other NSR cams use no more than .450".

Basically I am wanting to know if those with the BBR stage 1's retained the stock springs and how is it working for you? How much hp tq gained? Any dyno graphs?

Any opinions on this?

I am hesitant to go with the BBR's because it appears that they have double standards. But I would like to get the best bang for the buck and a good tune to go with them. I read that power gains are comparable to the Comp NSR Stage 2's. But I like the fact the BBR's actually have a noticable idle. The Comps sound nearly stock. Although I prefer power/ET's over sound. Sound would just be a bonus.

Yes, I am aware of the thumprs. But I also read that people are having driveabilty issues every now and again. If I did go with thumpr's, I'd go with stage 1's. I don't think there is much power to be gained with them.

Thanks!

Yeah the "I beleive..." is what makes me skeptical. .480" and .490" are awfully close to be guessing. That's why I wanted some feedback from people that have installed them with stock springs. Or just someones honest professional opinion on whether it's safe or not.

It's either: A.) they are NSR or B.) they are VSR. Pretty simple if you ask me! I don't understand why BBR says two different things (Website and John). Do they "recommend" valve springs so that there asses are covered when someone has some PTV contact? Or is the site outdated and exstensive research/testing has been performed which proves that there are no issues when using stock springs?

I am not trying to be a dick and I have nothing at all against John or BBR. I just want to be sure 100% sure before I purchase a product from them. I am just an interested customer that would like feedback from others.

No doubt, me too. I am ordering these. A lot of people that get them at BBR don't post on here. So I guess as far as trusting them on their word. I looked around at people with comp cams and other comparables lifts that seem to be alright after XXXX miles...

I just bought VSR stage 2 cams specs are 222/235 duration @.050 and lift is .490/.480 this is a comp cam that requires springs. BBR specs are 227/233 and .480/.480 BBR has more duration on the intake than VSR comps but less lift and BBR has less duration on the exh and same lift! These cams should perform about the same but the operating range on BBR is 1500-6000rpm and the comps is 950-6400 because of the LSA which is 114 on BBR and 115.5 on VSR Comps. If comp requires springs at .490/.480 how can .480/.480 not need them? just my .02 Comp VSR drive like stock and make 30rwhp but you cant really notice the idle unless you know cars. Your mom wont notice but your car junkie friend will!

These cars arent cheap and if you treat em with cheap parts and cut corners you will pay later I promise!

I believe that stock springs are rated to a .500 lift. So no you don't need them but the valves will a bit snappier if you do get them. So yes they are recommended but not necessary. Personally if I went with anything over .475 lift I would probably upgrade.

Stock valve sprigns coil bind at .512 lift.

Our stage 1's are .480 lift.

You'll be fine.

Stage 1 cams are definitely a NSR style cam.
