not a good idea - your increasing the possibility of detonation

get a 91 or 92 tune

when i was traveling i had no choice. i'm from texas and we have 93 octane. went on a trip to ohio. they and many other states had nothing better than 91 octane. i had no issues, but i also made sure i didn't get on it either. i do agree though, if you can avoid it don't do it.

/\ for an occasional trip yeah you can get away with it by not getting on the car but if its a DD situation not smart to do

OK. I wasn't sure if it was like many cars that spec premium but you can run on regular with the side effect being lower performance/economy. Do our cars have adaptive tuning?

a canned tune for 93 is built to run 93 and take advantage of the added timing that can be thrown on there

idk if the computer can "backward adapt" like your suggesting

While driving across the states I was in a situation where the highest octane available at a pump was 87. I was using a 91 tune at the time. I wouldn't do it if I didn't have to, but nothing bad came of it.

under normal driving you'd likely not have any issues, however if you started flogging the car that's where an issue could occur

One option that should prevent any problems is to take your handheld tuner(assuming you have one) when you go on a long trip, and retard the timing if you have to use gas with a lower octane than the tune.

i've wondered about that in the past as there are more than one area to change timing. i use the sct xcal II and it isn't just a simple take off 2*. you have to choose where to take it from. so would you take it from all the different places. i had no idea so i just didn't mess with it.

"global spark" IIRC is the nomenclature that SCT uses

So can one adjust global spark themselves or does it have to be done by a tuning facility? I've got the cable to hook up my Predator to my laptop but I'm told it's just for data logging..haven't hooked it up yet.

if the parameter is available for the user to adjust you can just use the handheld

you can adjust the global spark has it's hooked up to your car. just go the the modify tune area of the menu of whatever tune you have loaded, retard or advance it as you want, hit escape and it'll go to where it asks you if you want to install the tune and just hit yes

pretty much fool proof. you can't open the tune file from your laptop. you can only adjust parameters when the predator is hooked to your car.
