… installed the old clutch combo - to compare the numbers .
Result : with the used Valeo Set up from the factory the preload is 0.840 inch / 21,34 mm in this case the steel fingers are looking over the top of the clutch because the clutuch plate is worn .

Looks like I need shims
to bring the preload up to an inch . Hope that summit has 1/2 inch spacer / shim .
If I use this one i am at 0.940 inch /23,88 mm

Longer screws are the smallest Problem we habe billions of metric stuff here

There are 3 shim sizes readily available in .060" increments IIRC.
I ended up with the thickest one.
Based on the travel of the throwout bearing, this still put me at the end of travel of the hydraulics. I could have put in a 1/2" shim without any issue.
** Make sure the TOB is centered, the shims raised it past the machining on my trans. I had to use longer bolts, and put a piece of rubber hose (the thicness of the TOB flange) on the bolts to center the TOB. Some masking tape would probably work also.

Summit has a 0.500 inch spacer kit … from quarter master .. incl ss line and longer bolts . I think i will buy this kit ..
So the total preload comes out aprox . 0940 inch

... I am a little confused now. Visited "RAM Clutch " and they call for 0.750 (max ) preload for their clutches... When I made my calculations, I was working with numbers from this forum here....

I don´t want to break the clutch assy.. because even RA is short on clutch TOBs !! FTE, LUK, Sachs.. aso... all out of stock !!

Work the TOB (the old one), and see just how much travel it really has. While .750 seems huge, I bet its still just in the middle of the piston travel. Which is like 20 or 30x more than the clutch actually needs to release.
I would simple add .180" to what you got and call it done.

went to garage... and here are the numbers of the old TOB. full travel is 1.432 inches exactly.

Do you mean, that I can add 0.180 to the 0.750 that was published by RAM Clutch ? If yes... when I did my math correct.. I come out with a preload of 0.939 ( when I use the 0.500 spacer with the new TOB )
So at the end I am dealing with 0.493 inches that I can use if the clutch will worn out... pretty much the same or close to the numbers I see with the old set-up installed. which is 0.35 of an inch.

so in this case the "safe space "is only 0.14 of an inch... not sooooo much .

Beside the clutch story... found some "autogram stuff " on my tranny. Never saw something similar on a transmission before..
good or bad ??

Close enough.
That spacing will NOT change the engagement point. To change that, you would need to change piston bore diameter.

On the trans markings, the colored marks are factory. The black marker stuff looks like service "logs" by po.

As far as the preload goes. If you have anywhere between 1/2” and 1” preload on the throwout bearing you are in the golden zone. The clutch will work without issue. If it’s less than 7/16” you may get e little chirping or nibbling now and then and more than an inch and 1/8 may limit the slave travel.
