Hey guys,

I was rear ended a 2 weeks back and my car was totaled.
Currently looking to get back into a mustang and I am debating 2 things right now.

Either

1) Use the insurance money as a downpayment and finance a 2013 GT
---The monthly payments are doable, but dont leave me much room

2) I found a 1966 mustang near me for sale, its $11,500
This is about half the insurance cash, so I wouldnt have to finance
Which looks really good considering school doesnt allow me much time to work

-Any opinions/suggestions?

Why not another 05-09 S197? The 66 does look cool but I don't know about having it as a DD.

I once bought a real nice restored '66 mustang to use as a daily driver, and it just didn't work out as well as I had thought. On nice days it was fine. But if it rained or snowed, it was miserable. The car would constantly fog up, the heater sucked, no a/c. The doors would freeze up in the winter and not open. Stuff started falling apart. No matter how well restored they are, the quality is just not what it needs to be for daily driver status. I really loved that car, but absolutely wouldn't have one as a daily again.

Not only that but the older cars while cool do not have airbags, abs, traction control, etc so they may be not as safe and more expensive to insure.

Here's my thoughts..... buy that coupe, add a good aftermarket A/C system and enjoy the shit out of it. They're really pretty simple cars and parts are very easy to find. Any shop can get parts in a day or two tops if they aren't immediately available.

Just remember you will be DD with 50 year old technology. Don't expect modern anything.

get the 66, find an early s197 or a later new edge with rest of the cash?
bam, you get a DD, 2 mustangs, and ladies undergarments will rain
or any vehicle thats cheap can fall under the 2nd DD car

Old cars don't make comfortable drivers. Once I got a late model Mustang my Galaxie sat basically unused for years. I finally sold it q couple years ago to someone that was going to use it. There's just no comparison to a modern car for comfort.

I kinda like this idea.

Get the 66, because that thing is cooler than cool. If you can't find an early S197 in your budget, then go with a New Edge Stang. I know that at least in my area, those are really cheap these days, and they're still cool. You could get a nice one for well under $10K. You might even be able to swing a Mach 1, which IMHO, are really cool cars.

But there's no way I'd have that '66 as a DD or my only vehicle.

The thing about getting the 2013 is that I would need to pay off my bike first (my financially stupid idea last year) so I wouldnt be financing a car and a bike, so I would only have about 16-17k to use as a downpayment

If i buy this for 11,5 I would have over 10k left over to save and would possibly work on saving up for a downpayment on a 2015 when they come out since I will be out of school and probably (hopefully) be working full time. By that time I would probably have my bike paid off as well.

Im mostly worried about reliability and driveability, I do commute quite a bit which might be the dealbreaker on this.

theres no way id attempt to dd a 50 year old car. theres just no reason to. not sure what you have to spend but for low 20s you could prob find a used '11 5.0 or as mentioned just get another 3v car

and nothing against the car but i dont see it making " ladies undergarments will rain".......

Ive been keeping my eyes open. I fell in love with this and kinda went crazy, the more I think about it the more I see reasons against it.

The dealership near me is selling used '10-'11 for 29k.....its nuts!

Im still talking to a few dealerships all around California, one thats about 6 hours away is selling '13s for 3-4k less then any down here

I was looking into getting a similar car to my 09, but I feel like since I actually need to get a car, If I didnt use this opportunity to get a 5.0 I will be kicking myself over it later

Go old school. I daily drove a 66 through high school with a 289 in it. After I graduated I began racing it, and ended up doing a really nice complete restoration. Car got a 408W with a tremec 5 speed and a 150 shot with a 9' spool and I still drove it every day for years. After having our first child I sold it, and not a day goes by that I dont miss that car. They are beyond cool.

Damn things are soo much cheaper here on the east coast. A local guy on craigslist has an '11 401A 6M with 34k miles listed for $22,900

I sell you my 08 for 17 :D

The 66 looks really clean, but driving a 50 year old car as a daily would be rough... the 13's are sure nice too though! Goodluck!

26k for my '13..

Dont buy that 66 for a DD. Stupidest thing you could do.

I say go for the 5.0. 17k down is a fuck ton.

Im trying to get a good deal on a '13
I also found a 2011 Kona Blue 5.0 with 20k miles for about 22,600 that looks appealing.

but man, I 2013 tail lights.....must have.

I think I might just borrow my dads old Tahoe and drive that for a few months and save up and put like 25k down and finance the rest which should be doable

the more i think of getting the 66' for the DD id just feel bad beating on such an awesome car

and how did you get 26k for a '13? I would go nuts if i came across one like that, of course im in a bad situation of having short legs so a manual isnt doable
