Stainless are fine and the rings will last longer but will be more harsh on the cylinder walls...gapless is what you don't want. Most likely stainless top and napier lower ring but I would doubt gapless.

So obviously its the heads...question is, will a valve guide/seal do the trick or is there more to this than just the seals?

Gerald,

I was looking at these pics and the valve stems appear to be ground down near the head. Stock valves don't look like that. At least that's how it appears in your photos. Am I seeing that or is it just an optical illusion?

One thing I've done for the last couple years is use Joe Gibbs Race Oil. Great for breaking in new motors. Ultra high in Zinc and such which is good for bearings and rings. I do the first run up at 2400-2800 with light load for 30 minutes. Then drop oil and swap filter. Then I run 500 miles and drop the oil and filter again. To get my light load I usually have the car on a post lift or on stands and just put it in gear and let it roll the drivetrain while it's up. Nothing fancy. But I've never had issues with ring seat or eating bearings when I've broke in new motors

Ummm....is JDM not assisting you in any way with this?

They offered to work with me if I sent them the motor.
I figure the cost of shipping the motor and back, the amount of time, and cost it will take, I'm better off doing it myself. Unfortunately, I'm 3,000 miles away.

Jdm rings are just total seal rings rebadged

We don't claim them to be our own rings, we call them JDM Spec on our description because its what we use as Spec in our engines. Spec'd is a common term you hear used by many engine builders and performance shops. We also will tell anyone who asks they are Total seal. They are the best available ring option we have found for our engine program.

Ummm....is JDM not assisting you in any way with this?

We have been in contact with Gerald every step of the way, answering emails, calling him direct, replying to these threads with our suggestions, advice, and help. We offered to have him send us the engine to inspect it and fix it. He is choosing to do this himself because of shipping costs. We are still offering any guidance or assistance he needs. We stand behind all of our work and engines, we do not know the cause of the problem yet because I have stated numerous times, the engine has not been out of the car and apart to find what happened. We have our theory's, heck everyone who's posted in his threads has their theory. But until its apart, and something is found with physical evidence we are all just kicking the can.

The valve stems aren't ground, that is how stock valves look. This is the way I have seen ever 3V production valve come from Ford.

Here is a picture of a set we removed from a customers head before sending them out to be ported and replaced with Manley valves.

I have some stock valves in front of me to compare with. I can see what the normal taper looks like. What I was specifically talking about is this pic. It could very well be the picture quality or my eyes but to me the stem looks rough and tapered near the head.

I see what your saying but it looks like shadowing in the picture, grainy picture quality, and the angle from which its taken to me. Here is a picture of another valve at the same angle as this one. It looks like its tapering down as you get to the head.

I used mod max SS rings......and those are NOT just repackaged total seal rings. Mod max claims they are better, they use to repackage the total seal rings before the developed thier own.....so far im happy with them.

I have noy used mod max rings so I cannot comment on them. However always be careful of what the person trying to sell you their product says about their stuff.

That's obvious, before I bought them I actually talked to total seal about them and even they said they were a good ring, they never said better, but they definitely didn't try to knock them.
