I have some more "theory" as to what might have caused this failure.

I was looking for my old lifter shims that I used when I originally put the BBR cams in with. I got to thinking about the lifter hole in the head. The original shims I put in were a little smaller than the outside diameter of the lifter, which may have restricted the oil flow into the lifters. This time I installed shims with the same diameter of the bottom taper of the lifters. When I had these cams in the first time the valvetrain was noisey. I was thinking the followers didn't get enough oil. I removed the cams because of the noise. I should know tonight if I have any noise. I had it together last night, but I think I have one of the cams miss timed. I have to recheck everything tonight.

This summer I was running 10w-40 and wasn't getting near as much oil in the catch cans as I am now with 5w-30. Only reason why I went with a thinner oil is because its freakin 29 outside right now. So I am thinking, the oil would have to be flowing to the heads better with thinner oil. BTW so ok thinner oil helps the heads but what is it doing for the mains and rod bearings? Is it a rob paul to pay peter deal going on?

run 5w-20. i cannot explain enough about the oiling issue. read the ticking thread. replace the oil control housing on the effected side of the engine. or replace both to reduce you having to do it again...

once the housing gets clogged with particles, it will restrict oil to the cylinder head/follower/cam. also use a motorcraft oil filter with the anti-drainback valve. it holds oil in the filter for startups which reduces engine wear during cold starts. most cheap aftermarket/gas station filters do not use this valve and the oil will drain back into the pan causing oil starvation during coldstarts.

Not at all... These motors are designed and tested with 5w20. Keep your oil changed regularly with synthetic or synthetic blend, keep it topped off, and you'll NEVER have a rod bearing or main bearing issue caused by the oil.

No. But you will need a timing chain wedge (worth its weight in gold).

Well, it's a catch 22. No, you don't have to pull the front cover if you remove the cam/phaser assembly as a whole but you need the valve spring compressor to do that.

Why not just clean the filter/screens ?

Hmm I wonder if they are rebadged Oem or in fact a stronger product. Price is inline with Oem. Anyone used them?

I had this problem.....long time ago...

My car has 69k miles on it now...at roughly 36k miles, I had a REALLY LOUD tick on the driver side....took it in to the dealership, they found that the driver side head was not oiling as properly as it should be!! So it wore some shit out...lol! They replaced the driver side head, cam, and followers on both sides, and never had another issue!!

wtf. This follower crap is getting ridiculous. Who has pull in this community that can get the ear of an aftermarket company to come up with a reasonable solution for stronger rollowers/better lash adjusters etc etc.

Theses are some vct deletes that I made. These are before I finished them off though . Maybe not for everyone but, should work nice on my play toy .
