So my car had been down for a while due to a 4r70 swap, detroit rocker s/c cams, and longtubes. I have started the car about 6 times trying to make sure the trans has the correct amount of oil but now ran into a p0022 code. I took the valve covers off and everything looks good. Cam caps, vct solenoids dont look bad, etc. Camshafts install went perfect so trying to figure out if anyone has run into this issue due to tune issues. I was gonna start to datalog for lito due to running extremely rich at idle but i actually have to keep my foot on the gas to start it. I sent a pm to lito but waiting for a response. If the current outdated tune can be the issue i would like to put it back together and start the datalog process. What do you guys think? Im leaning towards the tune since no mechanical issues are present.

A P0022 DTC trouble code may be caused by one or more of the following:
  • Incorrect camshaft timing
  • Wiring problems (harness/wiring) in intake timing control valve control solenoid system
  • Continuous oil flow to VCT piston chamber
  • Failed timing valve control solenoid (stuck open)

My guess based on recent cam swap is timing, chain may have skipped a tooth.

I guess ill try swapping the solenoids to see if it follows. Spring inside them seemed to move freely but might have to test the to see if its a internal issue.

So are you saying that the cam install went fine cause you started it up before and it ran fine, or this is the first time your starting after cam install? If mechanical you could be off a tooth on one side, if electrical I would check the cam position sensor.

I did cams last year and had hard starts with flooding also, I did have Springs and Lockouts with my cams. Two things I did to keep it running was leaning out the cold start fuel tables and raising the Idle. Your location I wouldn't think it ending up rich cause of the cold like up north in the winter here. After warm up it would switch fuel tables and actually run lean, GF. My cams idle was required to be raised about 200rpm to be in proper range and would settle down the coughing and dying. I think your detroit rockers are made for that low idle thump. You may want to raise that idle to get your datalog but it seems a sensors bad or timing problem.

Do you have anything else done like comp limiters, springs or lockouts?

Jeremy, what did you and Greg used to suggest regarding the MAF when we were all changing our cams for Hot rods and Rockers a couple years ago and everybody was having idling and running issues thinking it jumped timing????? Something about disconnecting the MAF and seeing if the problem does something....

Did you use the R timing marks for the passenger bank and the L timing marks for the drivers side?
This is the correct way.
Did you pressurize the lubrication system with a sprayer tank or similar item prior to start-up to ensure the chain tensioners had oil?

Yeah unplug the maf to rule out a tune issue when starting and idling. Greg did have this code at one point, ended up one of the cam caps came loose iirc.

Ill try running with the maf unpluged to see how she does. And as far as the timing marks goes i marked them in serveral spots and all those lined up after turning the motor by hand several times. Oh and still running stock springs along with phasers.

Well i swapped both vct solenoids and cam position sensors from left to right, changed oil, and raised the idle a bit and seems to be running good without any codes. Left the car idleing for about ten minutes with no issues. Hopefully it stays that way.
