Yes, another CAI vs stock airbox question

OK, I know this is VERY non-technical, but I'm trying to think this through logically. I'm an IT guy. We put hours of thought into saving minutes of work.

I just picked up a brand new (NOS) Saleen Shaker NA scoop for my 3V and got it installed. I know it doesn't do really anything for performance but I love the old school vibe. In the interest of form vs function, would using the stock airbox (which is sealed) and connecting the shaker via an intake tube be more efficient than trying to route air from the shaker to my open C&L CAI?

I know, I'm probably putting way to much though into this, but I'm partially convinced that if the stock intake doesn't flow air much less air than an 83mm CAI, and if it's sealed, allowing it to draw air through the shaker be a benefit. I was thinking the 2010 intake tube is a bit more "custom" looking for the stock airbox setup too.

Feel free to share ideas or flame! :flamingdevil:

Here's the setup with the shaker and the C&L CAI. I think it does look cool as is, but just thinking of the best way to utilize the shaker.

Thanks in advance!

I'd route whatever shaker air comes out of that thing to the shroud on the CAI you have now.

The factory airbox is sealed to the fender, but with the large opening you won't relieve some vacuum from using the shaker inlet anyway. You'd be passing the shaker air to the dirty side of the filter, of course.

Air turbulence plays a big part when pushing thru the inlet tunes as well.

I was thinking about that too. I'm not certain if it would help in any way, but I thought about simply removing the intake tube from the shaker to let hot air vent out. A simple hole in the hood with the scoop would probably be more "effective" at venting but it goes back to the shaker being primarily a cool appearance mod.

I guess the real benefits of a CAI is increased surface area on a cone filter and the larger MAF housing to allow better airflow. Maybe an airbox like the Magnacharger would work?

Again, too much thought going into the CAI. LOL

If you prefer a closed airbox over an aftermarket CAI ? Consider the Saleen airbox lid.. It has a larger/oval 98mm MAF housing that's a direct replacement for your OEM airbox and is very similar to the Magnacharger airbox..

If interested, here's a link and images to check out..

Exactly what I was looking at. I believe they used that setup in the Parnelli Jones. I'll have to see if it's easier to route the shaker intake tube to it than my current CAI

Your exactly spot on, as Saleen did indeed use that setup for the Parnelli Jones edition and also came standard on all 2007+ Extreme models as well..

For $39.99 you also can't beat the price either

I have no complaints with my Saleen airbox, as it made 432 RWHP on the dyno along with my Saleen blower.. Here's an underhood image of my 06 GT..

this probably gonna be a stupid question but if I were to get that lid and ditch the stock gt tubing for the matching one for the saleen lid would I need to get a tune or will it still deliver then same amount of air flow as the stock gt box? And also where can I find the oval air intake tube for it?

Brenspeed, 281Motorsports and eBay has them.

Yes, you'd need a tune as its a 98mm maf housing.

I just had the tube modified from my old shaker to put the air into the bottom of my CAI housing. Not sure if any gains came from it or not but probably just as much as any closed cover would give and the CAI looks way better IMO.

The only stupid question, is the one that doesn't get asked lol.. Anyway as mentioned.. Yes, you must get a re-tune, as the MAF lid housing is 98mm in diameter..

As for getting both the Saleen lid and intake tube.. I highly recommend that you purchase them from saleencars84.. They're formally known as Saleen speedlab parts which are sold from remaining left over inventory that are still in brand new condition..

They have a website on E-bay which I'm going to provide links for you..

In addition, Brenspeed will also send you a custom tune via e-mail for the Saleen intake.. As they did mine and I've been very pleased with it..

In the meantime, here are the links below..

So which air intake are you running with your Saleen stage 3 ?
As I know through personal experience that an Airaid CAI is not compatible with a Saleen VI blower, as the intake tube will not fit properly..

Thanks for the links! I did see those and it seems like a great option for a 98mm setup.

Your very welcome ! As I mentioned earlier, I've been very pleased with both the Saleen 98mm airbox and Brenspeed tune.. IMHO it's a really great addition for both supercharged and naturally aspirated applications, especially for those who prefer OEM quality over aftermarket..

You'll be getting both the Saleen airbox lid and intake tube for $199.98.. So I'd say it's well worth it and at a bargain for OEM quality.. As for replacing your C&L street CAI goes, you don't necessarily have to replace it altogether, but rather alternate between the C&L and Saleen..

Despite the Saleen being an enclosed airbox, IMO you should still expect to see a significant increase in both airflow and power, as the Saleen has the larger 98mm MAF over the C&L's smaller 83mm MAF..

So if the Saleen provides more airflow and offers better performance over the C&L ? only then would I consider replacing it, otherwise keep them both..

Here's also another factor to consider.. Once the Saleen intakes and other parts are finally all sold out and no longer available, their value is only going to increase as parts become more and more difficult to find..

As I'm pretty sure there's going to be plenty of Saleen owners out there searching for replacement parts for many years to come

Very sound logic! I should add that a Paxton Novi is in my build plans. So the CAI will eventually be pulled anyway. I suppose $200 or so for the Saleen kit isn't bad, and I could sell my C&L to cover part of the cost. Any potential buyers?! :)
