I run an Airaid Synthamax filter on a 6"X4" aluminum spectre tube. Cost me $50 shipped for both parts from JEGS.

This is what it looks like

That looks great gizmo! I have a Airaid intake right now, I should just get a 4x6 tube and make them together :).

JLT and Vortech is better since they come with a shield that keeps the engine hot air out of the intake.

You do need to trim the JLT one a bit otherwise it will hit the relocated lower radiator hose, at least it did on mine.

This has been logged and shows zero IAT changes without a shield. The shield is for looks if anything. The FMIC does wonders regardless of what the filter is sucking in. Just touch the U pipe going into the TB after a drive.

So, what you saying is that CAI's for these cars have very little effect on performance with these cars and are really more for the look/sound?

I haven't tuned my car with the blower yet, but the CAI's should be better then the stock air box as it helped my n/a setup anyway, and yes I think the shield is more for looks then anything I just modified my n/a shield to work an it looks nice.

Didn't you just have issues with catching a shit ton of water because you don't have a shield?

The shield might help stop water, but it has zero effect on the intake temps. Log it yourself, dont take my word for it. Go and test. I already have, and I trust MY data, not the interwebs or ads in a magazine.

As for a CAI vs stock box, it just flows more air, and without a tune to recognize it..... oh hell, Im not gonna get into this conversation, never mind.

Shield = pointless for temps. As for water, foam in half of the heat vent will stop more water than the shields. ( I have tested this on a very rainy day, it works )

Im just speaking from actual hands on testing/logging, and more testing/logging, and more testing/logging.

But hey, you wanna buy something cuz someone says it will add 234horsepowers and 819lbs of torques while dropping your intake temps to -35 deg... Go ahead.

Look, a shield... It didnt stop water. And it doesnt stop heat either, but thats a whole different conversation that gets into physics. lol!

I thought I did, but could not prove it, so I changed the oil, didnt see any water, changed it again, still didnt see any water, and with 2 oil changes, my CC fluid still looks very similar. Which tells me I wasted money on oil, but at least have peace of mind.

Did you guys measure IAT during long idle sessions? I know when you are cruising it's meaningless since the IC will cool it faster than the heatsoak, but how about when you stomp on it after sitting at a red light for 5 minutes?

After all my logging, I will not buy a heat shield. They are for looks, and help sell stuff. At a red light, the whole bay is filled with heat, the "shield" does nothing, unless you think it is made of unobtanium and stops heat dead in its tracks with its thermal barrier superman like abilities. Once the car moves again, the whole thing is moot. Shield = gimmick.

Funny thing, I did same testing on my LS3 swapped M3 and I had huge problems with an exposed filter, I had IAT's in the 160's. Once I got a shield it kept the temps down by 30-40 degrees. It was an N/A car though, so Intercooler makes a huge difference it seems.

My IAT's are never more than a couple degrees off from ambiant temps ...never ran without the JLT and shield to compare though ...it looks cool so im good with it ..lol

another thing is im a 2011 and dont have those funky hood vents so comparing to the 2013's and mine is kind apples and oranges

Another member on here did the same testing as well, he came to the same conclusion as I did. And hes a tuner. The front grille opening on the driver side was just designed really well to let tons of air flow through, it doesnt sit and stew in its own heat.

But then again, like you said, the FMIC is working wonders so... Maybe I should say I dont think a shield is needed on a paxton coyote, as that is the only car Ive logged to see differences. Not a clue about any other vehicle, but why would I wanna drive another car? I have a blown coyote! lol

I went with the Street Fighter kit which comes with the JLT. Hopefully by Sunday I'll be able to let you know how I like it.

i have a question I purchased a set of Ford Racing 80lbs injectors, and someone just told me that they would not work correctly when tuning on my 2012 paxton mustang is this correct? If so I can can return them an get ID's I guess since that appears to be the thing to do. Thanks in advance an forgive me if this has been asked before I'm new to the blowers an stuff on the new motor.
