So I'm looking to buy a back up trans in case my stock unit ever goes out in the future and a guy is offering me a B&M unit for $1000+ shipping that has an estimated 15xxx miles. Are these trans reliable and well built? I haven't been able to find much info on B&M besides their ratchet shifters

Looks like it's a $3000 custom order from B&M, it doesn't appear they upgrade the input shaft so whether it's well built and reliable is debatable... but as long as you're not slamming a ton of power thru it, it's not a bad deal for a grand ..

Their write up on it,

This 5R55S Street/Strip transmission has been modified specifically for
2005-2008 Mustangs. Capable of handling up to 600 horsepower, this transmission is built to perform. Itcomes with new servo pistons, Overdrive Sprag, and Overrun Sprag, just to name a few.

The factory valve body has been recalibrated to B&M specifications for optimal line
presure and shift schedule. B&M may not be building the mighty Hydrostick anymore, butthe experience and skills gained at the race track have been applied to this Ford 5R55STransmission.

The seller says he's had the fluid and filter changed, along with the shifter solenoid around 5,000 miles ago because the solenoid was damaged by a faulty alternator. Is that a common thing on these cars?

The guy that is selling this is a buddy of mine. I can attest that it's in nice shape and he did go through an issue a while ago that was fixed with the parts as mentioned. He's running a 298 stroker w/ a On3 turbo through it and it does great. The car is turned way down since he just putts around to work with it, zero racing. From riding in it, it's a nice trans and much better then a stock one.

Thanks for the review man. It's really hard trying to find much info about these transmissions for some reason. If it works well in his car then it should last forever in mine that will just stay with bolt ons lol

Well I had my current trans drained and the filter replaced. The dealership said it had really fine grey dust which was normal, but it also had some tiny flake like shavings that were brass. So now I'm worried that I'll need this B&M trans sooner than later.

What do you guys think about the TCI ratchet shifter? The seller also has one of these on the trans currently that he will sell me for a great price

I had several brand new TCI ratchet shifters..and the entire ordeal was a gong show. Also swapped in several new SJB's. ( smart junction box). The problem is /was..... once in a while the tci ratchet shifter will output some spike /transient /surge..to the SJB...and lock it up. What then happens is..... I come out of 711..and start the car..... and the damn thing will not come out of park ! The quick fix is to pop off the tiny cover... and insert a spare key, poker, etc, down inside onto the nylon tab. Then you can get it out of park....and the shifter works as normal....... until u stuff it into park. Then u have to do a manual over ride.

That feature in on the tci ratchet shifter..and also oem shifter...so the tow truck guy can get ur car out of park, and into neutral, etc.

When it 1st happened, I got another tci shifter shipped asap from AM. Installed..and now it all works, no problem getting out of park. Then 3 weeks later, problem is back. This time, we swap a new SJB in there..and again, all is well. Then 3 weeks later, problem back again.

Local ford dealer had the whiz bang come over from the next town, and they did a master re-set on the SJB.... problem solved......for about another week. This time they put a scope on the board, and verified that the TCI ratchet shifter is the cause of the SJB locking up.

Gave up on the tci. and re-installed the oem shifter. Zero problems for 2 years now. (never had a problem b4, with oem shifter either).

Even when the tci is working good, it buys u nothing..except for the ability to manually shift between 1-2-3-Drive. The oem shifter will allow u to manually shift from 1-2-3. (Once u manually shift into drive, it's locked into Drive).

The other problem with the TCI is..... to manually get from say 1st to park, u 1st have to manually ratchet several times..from 1-2... then 2-3, then 3-D..... then pull the 2nd lever, and manually shift to park ( or neutral or rvs).

IF u are manually in say 2nd gear... and mash the gas...once up to say 4 krpm... then stuff it into 3rd..... what happens is, it won't shift into 3rd. It will wind up to 6 krpm ( which is where my shift points are)... THEN shift into the next higher gear....... this is all normal.

I can manipulate the oem shifter a lot quicker than the tci... u don't need to press the rls button on the side either, when manually shifting.

This is on my 2010 auto with the same 5r55. The tci may look cool, but it really buys u nothing but grief. As is, I can take my pinky and manually shift from 1-D. You can't do that with the tci.

Don't waste ur time with it.

What I did do to my oem stock 5r55 is to install the JDM catch can for it.....otherwise it will puke ATF all over the road. Also added the B+M auto tranny cooler..plumbed in series with oem auto tranny cooler...( PN 70268). Also installed the PA performance 10 lb aluminum pan..which holds an extra 4 qts, and is 2" deeper ( lower)..and also comes with a locking style dip stick.... which ends up next to the firewall by the battery.... and stick is plenty big enough to add ATF if required. Then had all the old ATF sucked out....and replaced with new RP..'max ATF'..which is synthetic ATF.

B4, even with the new deeper pan, auto tranny temps would jump from 170 F to 200 F in just 5-7 secs with the small M90 blower on... while on the hwy. Once the 2nd tranny cooler installed... it only climbs by 1-2 deg max.

It's a good deal for the trans, you will need a spare, you will need a spare to the spare pending on how much hp and the way you drive. So spend your cash on a good backup now, the TCI ratchet shifter is just cosmetic improvement, I have one I like it for the looks.
