  1. Hey guys im new to the website but came here seeking for some help.... I dont have the extra money to pay a mechanic, an im hoping to fix this problem myself with a little bit of help.. im running out of ideas, just recently my 06 gt started to have a few problems then just stopped running all of a sudden! An right before it died on me, it started missing real bad an backfiring an had a really rough idle, so i had someone come check it out an they told me it was my fuel pump because it hardly had any pressure an had backflow right back into the tank.. So i replaced the fuel pump assembly an fuel filter an it fixed my fuel pressure problem but car still doesn't wanna start... sometimes it will kick over for about 5 seconds but just dies out again and i know its getting fuel an spark so im clueless as to what else it could be, i know a week before it just died it would have a small miss but would clear out in higher rpms im possibly thinking it could be the fuel pressure sensor or maybe crankshaft sensor but im not sure, an i dont have the money to just start guessing.. It did have a code thrown but when i reset my computer it cleared it out an i cant keep the car running long enough for it to throw another code.. any ideas would be greatly appreciated, an car has 133xxx miles if that helps... Car does have a few aftermarket parts has a jlt serious 3 cai an has comp cams stage 2 nsr, an bbk longtubes into a xpipes with catt deletes.. Has been dyno tuned as well.. Did find out my mass air flow sensor is metled could that possibly be keeping my car from starting... But i hear that you can run a car without a maf sensor, but im clueless just looking for some honest answers thanks in advance for the help...

You can start it with the maf unplugged but that doesn't mean it will start with a malfunctioning one. Do you have a handheld tuner with the car? You can always reload the tune for shits and giggles. Unhooking the battery only erases KAM data but it couldn't hurt to reload it. A new maf too. Do you have any friends with mustangs? if you do swap in theirs and see what happens.

No i tried cleaning the maf sensor, an i tried unhooking it as well to see if it would start an still nothing.. I can't reload the tune because i had it done at a shop, an they are a couple hours away from me, an i did hook up a hand-held to it but nothing was coming up for codes an i cant seem to get the car to start at all today... Usually will hit like it's gonna turn over but its not even doing that today...

You might need to charge the battery if you've been cranking on the engine a lot. If you have the handheld you can reload the tune. How did you check for spark?

I'd go simple first. Pull the vacuum line for the FRPD and smell for gas. If it's been a few days you might not get much of a smell. If that's the case pull it and try to blow through it. You shouldn't be able to. If you can the FRPS is bad.

Yes i did have to charge up the battery, its went dead a few times.. I would believe the tune should be okay but im not sure.. An all my coil packs an spark plugs was replaced within the past year.. An where is this frpd hose located at? does it run into my cai i kinda have been getting a smell of gas up front when i try to crank it over 4 or more times.. An what exactly is a FRPS?

Replacing them doesn't mean they're firing. The easiest way to check is to put a COP by a bolt and watch for spark. Or have someone watch for spark.

FRPS- Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor. It's the black sensor on the front of the driver side fuel rail. It has a vacuum line and electrical plug hooked up to it.

I ran mine without the MAF and it ran, but it did some RPM seeking when
cruising. I have an automatic, the 2nd to 3rd shift was a nasty bind up and
bang into gear... It will run off the MAP sensor in the EGR system when the
MAF is down. I don't know why shifting was effected, but it was nasty. As
soon as I plugged the MAF back in, it was fine. I am tuned with a handheld,
and that's how it acted.

MAF also contains the IAT sensor.

Tune will be fine, it doesn't erase when you lose batter power, only the learned
values, like idle trim, and stuff. You need to relearn the throttle trim (idle) when
battery power is restored. It's basically just idling for ~13 minutes from cold to
operating temp.

Well when it first died on me, i went an borrwed a reader an no codes came up but was able to check all my reading for fuel pressure spark ect.. An when i was cranking the car over i believe the spark readings was the correct amount when id go to turn the car over.. So could that fuel pressure sensor, go bad an cause the car to maybe not get enough gas or to much gas an flood it out? Is there anyway to test the fps?

The GT doesn't have a separate EGR system as that function is served by the VCT system retarding the cam timing under certain conditions.

Try cranking over with the gas pedal to the floor. If it flooded out for some reason that will get it going. That happened to me once.

I have tried doing that an still doesn't wanna start, im thinking about replacing my maf sensor today an if that doesn't work im gonna check my fuel pressure sensor, then my crankshaft sensors does the 3v have 1 on each side?

Just checked in my Haynes manual and you're right. Seems dumb of Ford to integrate the IAT sensor with the MAF but there you are.
Why would you consider it dumb? It's not like IAT sensors go bad a lot. And usually the IAT and MAF are pretty close together. One less plug and one less sensor to deal with.

I just checked the line on my fuel pressure sensor that runs to my other fuel rail an i can blow air threw the line an i dont smell any gas at all pumping threw it.. I think this could possibly be the issue what do you guys think?

Fair point but if one component of the two goes south, you'll need to replace the whole sensor. There could potentially have been two $35 sensors instead of one $70 sensor (price just an example).
As far as the OP's problem goes, it's worth replacing his since it's slightly melted. There's no guarantee it'll solve the problem and, in the worst case, he'll be left with a good MAF sensor as a spare (unless his MAF sensor is indeed defective and he's unlucky enough to buy a new one that's also defective).

Edit: Just saw your post in another forum where you said you've replaced the MAF sensor and that hasn't helped.
Before you throw any more parts at the problem, try scanning the ECU again for codes. You might just get lucky this time.

That's the vacuum line from the fuel pressure sensor and it should be free of fuel, so it sounds like that's good.

Use your handheld hooked up to a laptop with SCT tuner software and read your fuel rail pressure; it should be 39 PSI. If it is not, your FRPS or fuel pump is bad...or clogged fuel filter.
