I suspect she wasn't 100% deaf ... They probably used the tag line, "Woman hears her own voice for the first time" as a publicity stunt.

It seems like they used a lighter load and bullet in the video.

In comparison the .50 bmg has muzzle energy 12,000-14,000 ft·lbs.

And correction: the rifle weighs 80-110lbs.
