i'm making the switch tomorrow to 4.56's. i figure it'll turn 2716 @ 70mph, which is about 131 rpm more than the 4.33's

would you still use this gear if you could do it over again? what kind of mpg do you get over all..or on the highway? i've been averaging around 18 with the 4.33's..(mostly in town)..but it'll creep up over 20 with them out on the road

I have 4:56's in my DD. I avg about 320 to 350 miles of driving per week. I run a 27" tire on the street and a 28" DR at the track.

At 75 MPH I am at 3000 rpm's and getting 20-21 mpg at a steady cruise. In the city I get about 14.5 mpg. Wish I did it the first time. Would def do it again.

Get a trutrac to have it installed at the same time (if you don't already have one) Also a great mod for these cars...

I think you guys just pushed me to do 4.56's.......

Question: What about on the highway if someone were to pull up beside you about 55-60mph, what procedure do you take to run that person......what gear do you go too, 3rd?

I have ported heads, agressive cams, and make power to 7200 rpm with a 8000 rpm rev limit, so at 55 mph I drop it in 2nd and commence the ass wiping. However, that is a touch over 5500 rpm's for me. If you have stock heads/cams or close to it, I would recommend 3rd instead. 3rd should put you near the start of your power band.

i guess i'll find out. but eventually i think i'll go to a 295/45/18 tire, which is i think 28.4". it'll turn even less rpm than it does now with the 4.33's

at the track it would run up to 115mph before hitting the rev limiter...it won't be anywhere close to that

Keep in mind, we are NA and the power levels are not too high. If I (we) were running boost, I would be more likely to agree.

What is your rev limiter at? With my 28" DR's I still bump 115 at 7k and near 125 mph at 8k.

/\/\6700...but it's only trapping 108 now....it won't jump up to 115 with 4.56's which is what it would take to hit the limiter

i'll break out the calculator, but there's plenty of room left with the 4.56's

edit:
gear 4.555
tire 26.3
mph approx 111
tranny final drive 1.0
rpm 6459

You already know I have 4.56's, not my DD tho. I shouldve done them earlier than I did, great gear for a N/A heads-cams mod-motor car.

yes, just seeing if anyone else is doing it.....would you feel okay with it as a dd if you needed to?

edit: what diameter tire are you using at the track?

Ive never used a Mustang as a DD but I live in Ohio in rural area (not uncommon to look out and have 3' of snow down my 388' driveway lol). Ive always had other cars (I have 6 total now) but if I lived in say Dallas,Tx sure i dont see why not. I wouldnt take it cross country but you could. You will still get around 20+/- MPG at 65MPH. As for tires I alternate between 25.7 and 27.2 M-T D/R (275's and 295/17's on stock 17x8" rims).

I've been running 4.56 gears in my daily for over 3 years. Didn't change my highway mileage and actually improved my stopand go street mileage b/c the car doesn't have to work so hard to move.
