DI has been a concept and in development for a LONG time. I think Subaru was one fo the first companies that actually had a working system. Its been about 15 years since I read the report on it but I do remember being extremely impressed with the results. More fuel efficient and more power per cubic inch then anything else available ( at the time)

The new 5.0 heads already have bosses for DI. I wonder when it will be implemented? If ever.

DI does have its drawbacks, which is why Toyota/ Lexus uses port AND direct injection on some of its engines. Something to keep in mind is that because of our fuel quality US engine run very minimal lean burn and some don't run in lean burn mode at all. Carbon deposits and oil dilution is definitely a real issue with DI engines, but for the most part the automakers have all been able to eliminate most issues. Personally a dream build would be a high compression boosted Coyote, with DI bosses drilled for a secondary on demand fuel system at high rpm and high loads in addition to pump gas.
