Fairly certain during the transition from full throttle to deceleration at 8500 rpms, the wrist pin boss in the piston failed. Then the rod exiting the pan, and the oil created a flash fire on the headers. Zero damage happened to the car but the engine carnage is unknown yet. Water was running out of the pan so I'm sure the damage is significant.

IIRC you are thinking of a modular boss motor as a replacement, is that correct? I'm sure it's something that you have thought through. If you don't mind sharing I'd like to know the thought process.

Marc S,

Sorry about your misfortune with the engine.

Terry

C'est la vie. 2.5 hp per cubic inch and 9000 rpms is hard on parts.

The heads, valve train, cam, lifters are all fine. I think even the crank is ok.

This was from Saturday's qualifying. I was pretty much kicking everyone's butt before it let loose. LOL.

Marc,

I guess maybe what I am going to say here might be just silly as I don't know you and your financial situation for sure.

If that was my new engine set-up going on right now at Brenspeed and mine did what your's just did.

I would be a SICK !!!

In my case I guess I could afford to fix it if mine did that but I sure hope I am not faced with having to make the decision.

Of course I'm not racing mine and it sure is never-ever going to be turning any exotic RPMs either.

I'm just saying I sure HATE this for you even if you are a rich fellow and the cost does not even matter.

Thanks Terry. As much as this sucks, I'm fortunate enough to be able to afford it. All the hard work and lost time bothers me more than the money. Although, knowbody likes throwing money away. When I started this build, I assumed these Cup engines were pretty much bullet proof. I should have researched this before hand because as it turns out, certain components have a life span of just over 500 miles.

A V10 Mustang has always intrigued me. Ported heads, Manley rods, 12.0:1 compression, custom intake manifold for a carburator, and a crank trigger MSD ignition.

Man that sucks the block didn't make it. I am assuming the crank didn't make it either?

Yeah I assumed the same, that the motor would be bullet proof. I didn't know that about the pistons.

BUT--that being said, if one were to change the pistons with a stronger wrist pin design, then it would have been, in fact, bullet proof?

The car sounded awesome on the vid you posted.

I wouldn't recommend the Briggs W16 model motor for reading. It won't have the power top push that car.

V10 would be interesting, but for some reason I thought they were quite heavy?
