Hope it's nothing to terribly serious. I don't see how a lockout could fail for the simple fact that it locks in the cam, but if it did you could be looking at some really serious damage. When I built my motor they didn't make aftermarket phasers, and I ended up with valves in pistons. Real PITA....

i guess I'll start the teardown on monday and see what happens. It will be slow going as my finger is still broken so holding tools in my right hand is tough heh

IIRC they are stock ford phasers with livernois lockouts. I guess i am just fooling myself that it could be that simple

I'm not familiar with that set up, and it could be that simple! Prepare for the worst and hope for the best, you could be pleasantly surprised

Another thought was, are you running an aftermarket cam? I had oiling issues when I first put my back together and had to bump the idle quite a bit to smooth it out...

Let your blood pressure go back to normal and don't do anything right now. I don't know how many times I have done things while I was pissed just to regret it later. Stuff always works out. If you just had the engine done, I would think the builder would want to pull it apart and see what the hell failed and hopefully the part manufacturer will stand behind making it right. Was this a stock oil pump, or aftermarket? Seems like the stock oil pump is the best to use. I know me personally, if I built someone a motor and this happened right away, i'd tear it down and check it out for nothing. If this thing is built, there is no way it should have popped already and you don't have a hole in the block, so that's a plus. I won't look for someone else yet, because your ass is gonna snap out of it and figure out what's wrong with your car and run it at the shootout!

I think larry h built his motor and that guy is long gone. Sorry hear about the motor ron. Hope it's a easy fix.

I'm glad that your going to tear it down and look for a cause. I'm super interested as my motor is the twin of yours. This still sucks though! I've actually been thinking of taking my stock block and putting a Liversois 298 stroker assembly in it. I have a good friend who is a mechanic and built his own engine and several others and I was thinking that would be a good way to learn about assembling a short block.
At any rate, I'll be following this closely and reading everything you post.

Like Eagle said, prepare for the worst and hope for the best. The downside to an oil pump failure is that it can fuck up many other things. But, you didn't window the block, so maybe would just be bearings or something. You'd still have to tear it down and rebuild it, but the cash outlay for hard parts would be minimal.

after my first build on my WRX it only ran for 3 weeks... popped the motor.

+1. That video you linked sounds just like a dry pump with the gears over-running. 2k05gt just went through the exact same thing on a car. That sound is pretty recognizable. As long as the run time was low with no oil pressure, the residue left behind should be enough to protect moving parts for an idle or slow drive back to the pits.

The lockout basicly convert the phasers to a gear instead of a variable timing piece. Unless you bent a pickup blade and it's wacking the pickup or chain (no likely) that is not going to be the problem. Plus a broken phaser does not explain the loss of pressure.

damn ron i dunno man mine sounded just like that but didn't match the revs nor did it show low oil pressure so i doubt its what was wrong with mine ..... but it may very well be just something stupid like a phaser or a pump so don't get to down yet my buddy steve ( forensicsteve ) lost a oil pump at the track last year on the big end at that turning damn near 7k and came out smelling like a rose nothing needed to be swapped but the pump itself ......by the way he was running a stock pump too

but believe me bro i feel your pain i have been down like 4-5 months finally build up the extra funds to get everything back up and rolling only for it to go out a week later so now im back at square one about 2k to spend to be back ready and about 5k away from having the 2k to spend on the car hell i even thought of doing a ck fire sale myself and just getting something else but like they said take a break , breath a bit then figure out what the deal is , hell everyone here has had their share of bull with the rides now granted you have most of us beat but we can all relate

Very sorry to hear this Ron ! I hope its just the pump . As soon as you get it out pull that pump and a couple bearing caps and let us know. To bad you dont live down here , Im not doing anything all weekend . Good luck Bro!
