Smoke on startup

Vid is screwed up but you can see the puff I get on startup. Car has no cats and has breathers on the valve covers. 5000 miles.

Will still do it just less after being warmed driven and sitting for a half hour the restarted.

Not sure what to think of it. I don't know if its always done this or not.

If it only does it on start up only (after sitting), and it is blueish, usually it is oil leaking into the cylinders. Does it do it every time it sits?

TBH I just recently became aware of it so I don't know yet whether it does it every single time. I'm guessing probably because it did it again after I restarted the car once it sat for 1/2 hour after driving it. Just not quite as much.

If it is hurt then I have no idea how it could've happened. It's never received any special abuse that anyone else hasn't done to one of these cars. I did have some bad fuel in the car recently and made one WOT pull that resulted in knock sensor activity. However that also isn't something numerous people haven't already experienced at one point or another.

It could be your tune with a little more fuel at initial tick-over.
What does a wipe on the inside of the exhaust look like? Oily or dry residue?
Cup your hand over it while someone else starts it and pull the smell up to your nose, what does it smell like?
Pull a plug and check for film deposits.

could just be bad valve seals. the old 4.6's think thunderbird specifically had this common issue not sure if it was all early 4.6's

Exhaust is dry no oily residue.

Started it yesterday after it sat for 5 days. No smoke.

If the problem is valve seals (just like 06silverbullet said) then you'll only get the blue puff on start-up and there won't be any residue in the exhaust tips. Maybe the period of quiet let most of the oil run down to the pan and there wasn't enough oil to generate smoke? If you can, do another start-up tomorrow and check for smoke. If she smokes then it is likely that a valve seal or two are passing. No guarantee of this diagnosis, just my opinion, lol.

Based on comments here and googling valve seals seems like the most likely candidate since so far it doesn't seem to do it post startup. If that is the issue not sure how it could've happened. I've read about a few other people with similar issues that come and go. Hard to know what to make of that.

Regardless I'm in the keep an eye on it and don't do much else mode at this point. If things get worse I will have to do something about it eventually. I asked vmp about it and they said they've seen it on other cars and not to worry too much about it.

Guess I'll wait and see.

My car has done it once or twice. The times it's done it were after starting and moving it into garage then shutting it off. On re-start there was a slight puff similar to yours. That was a while ago too. Haven't seen again and have about 36k on it.

I know this is an older thread, but mine is doing the same thing. My engine had around 40k before I built the shortblock. I bought the car with the engine in pieces, so never knew it had the smoking issue or I would have gone through the heads while it was apart. I was just trying to get it back together before I moved. Didn't want parts and pieces everywhere. mine didn't start doing it until after a few days of driving and only on start up and after a long period of idling(say 20+ minutes). I'm going to buy another set of heads and go through them so when I drop the engine for the turbo install, I will just swap heads. Hate the smoke on an otherwise fresh engine. Didn't puff one bit on break in on the dyno or when making pulls. Just sucks. glad I'm not the only one.
