Opened up the pass. side valve cover to find what was making my tapping noise. Boy did I find it lol. Destroyed a follower in the #2 cylinder and wiped out the cam lobe.

So I am going to install the BBR Stage 2 cams for sure now. I pulled the driver side cam as well. wiped out one cam lobe on this cam too. just not as bad. one of the rollers in a follower on the #7 cylinder was pitted. My shop said they had never seen either one of these issues to this degree.
52K miles on the heads. I'm will install all new followers tomorrow.

You guys might want to look into your tapping noise for sure now.

You might want to find out why this happened rather than just replacing the followers and cam. Odds are it will happen again. Sound like an oiling issue. I've suggested this in another thread but you might want to oil-prime the system with the valve covers off and see if oil is coming out of all the lash adjusters. What oil are you using ?

I was having major oil consumption issues a while back. I switched to 20W50 and it seemed to help. maybe the blown blower seal was my issue the entire time. Maybe this oil is too heavy. Maybe I'll try the lighter weight oil and see what happens

20W50??? I'm sure someone will chime in, but the 3v heads oiling passages are tiny, I'm not sure they will support that thick of oil.

Their is a lot of "maybe" in that statement.

Plenty have done it with out problems. I've even used 50W Valvoline Racing oil. ?You weren't around for the rash of oil pump failures and we all went through the oil debate.

I'm not sure what really caused it, but I hope it doesn't happen again lol.

I am using a 4V oil pump. I will prime everything before I button it up to make sure I'm getting enough oil up top

i agree

20w50 is way too think. the clearances in these motors is not set up to run that thick mud. the only thing the 2050 will do is mask a problem.

we built a primer out of a 302 ford oil pump and a 5 gallon bucket to check things like this. it might be a good idea to do the same.

replace your oil control housings. check the other thread. once they get clogged they will restict oil flow to your cylinder head ports at the cam/followers/lifters.

20W50 IS too thick. Sure it may "work" for some, but for how long? This should be a fine example of why it doesn't work.

Pull the valve covers off and start a cold engine up with 20w50 and see how long it takes for the oil to get distributed throughout the valvetrain on a modular. You'd be surprised and shown that you're starving your heads of oil on every cold startup.

Dont feel to bad just started my car tonight (cold) and out of the blue my heads are ticking and loud as a mofo ...dont know if its a cam phazer going out or shit about to break , 56k on a car that shifted at 6.2k (total bull shit !) always used 5-20 full synthetic in the car also.

Mine had 59k on it. Go check my thread for pics. This posternd myself had the same failure same day. Difference is my valve dropped as well effectively destroying the motor completely. Fix the tick. Spend the money on the oil control housing and new lash adjusters. Mine ticked 25k miles then gave without warning. I simply started the car and it broke. I wasn't even driving.

I noticed these head/oiling problems are arising when the weather is starting to get a little colder. Cobra93 is right, it does take a while for the oil to reach all of lash adjusters. When I primed my motor it probably took nearly 5 minutes before I started seeing oil come out of the lash adjusters. Now that's with a pump sprayer and obviously the oil pump has alot more pressure so it won't take 5 miniutes, but with 20W50 it will certainly take longer than 5W20. Do a cold startup everyday and that adds up to excessive wear.

Monk what oil are you running ? Take the housing/solenoid off and tear it apart. There are filters in the housing. Check to make sure none of those have any debris in them, etc. You obviously need to replace it at this point especially if you are using the correct oil.

It was mobil 1 5w 20 always. Everything will be replaced when I get the $$

Yeah, I'm going to go ahead and replace all my lash adjusters and also the passenger-side vct housing. I hate doing a fix-all approach to this ticking, but I'm not taking any chances with a new shortblock and blower. I have 38K on the heads as it stands.
