Drove it first time in a few weeks. Took it on the interstate and was going to do a pull. Traffic was too heavy. Good thing because further down the road there was a highway patrolman trying to get people. So I figured OK no big deal. Mile down the road an opportunity opened up so I stabbed it. As I was getting through about 90 I notice another black car parked in the middle further up. Hit the brakes got it back down to about 75 when I passed him. Lucky me I guess. They were out in force on that 3 mile stretch of road trying to get people.

^ That's why I have radar detectors installed in both vehicles and they come on with the ignition key. A guy said something once and it reminded me of how cops work. He said he wanted to put up an electric fence around his yard and only turn it on once in a while. Cops do the same thing, they go for weeks or months without patrolling a certain road and then one day- BAM! They are out stinging everybody they can. I have the radar detectors so I know exactly when the electric fence is turned on.

I'm thinking about it. I don't do pulls that often but I'm sure my luck will run out sooner or later. I've already been dinged once in town 67 in a 35. 4 lane road, one way, no traffic, but there was a cop. $120 fine - lucked out there. Paid it and it wasn't reported to my insurance either.

Wish there were better places around town but the interstate is the safest place to do it. Unfortunately if you pick the wrong day/time like you say.. It may not end well.

$120? Fuck, that's cheap! Tickets here start at about $260 and go up rapidly, not to mention the hit on your insurance. I usually pay the traffic ticket attorney to handle it so that's $100 plus the $135 or so court costs but no points and it doesn't get to my insurance company (usually).

I've never been ticketed while in Montana but my sister was a few years back and it was $20 for 10mph over i think. Sometimes when i'm out there i won't see more than 2-3 cops over a week long period.

Yah the fine wasn't reported to my insurance because the city at the time had a backlog going and offered to not report it as long as you didn't contest the charge. So damn right I ponied up that $120. Having lived in CA it felt like the deal of the century lol. If I weren't arrested I would have paid easily $500+ down there for that infraction.

So silly question, but how does a detector protect you in that scenario? I thought that the detectors only worked if the gun was pointed at you and by then it's too late?

I could see a jammer working in that instance, but a detector doesn't seem like it would really be that helpful.

With the radar in Florida the detector can pick it up over a mile away if the radar is running full tilt. If the officer is using a trigger the detection will go off briefly. Laser is a different ball game. It only let's you know your tagged. No warning.

Radar is a wave, so it spreads the farther from its origin the wave gets. Your detector SHOULD pick it well before it's even focused enough for an officer to get the signal, much less know that it's your car he/she is tagging. A lot of that depends on your detector though. A good one is not cheap, but my Escort 8500 x50, for example, has picked up radar two miles out on the highway. It has three different settings: 1) City — Short and wide scanning, 2) Highway — Long and narrow, and 3) Auto — Which is what I use for driving in the suburbs. If I'm in a city area I usually just turn it off. Speeding in the city is about as dumb as it gets. You'll either kill someone, destroy your car, get arrested, or kill yourself. Not worth it for 40 yard stoplight runs. That's barely enough time to hit 5000 RPMs.

Laser is a very precise tool. Basically, if you hear the laser warning, you're already fucked.

Drove mine this morning just as the snow was starting to come down, got sideways a bunch of times, came back home and parked it, now it has about a foot of snow on it.

Glad I got my quality time with it this morning :D

I really need to pick one up, I rarely do pulls but I regularly cruise at 80-85 in a 65. So does the rest of traffic in the left lanes but I don't wanna be the unlucky one who gets tagged, or get caught doing a pull.

Also, decided against cams, gonna get 4.10's instead. Bought some tails and sequentials and mirror covers off a member on here, gonna order a gt500 splitter soon, or cv3, and schedule my appointment for 4.10's. Tax returns are good :D

Wish you could counter lasers.

You can. Laser blockers are legal in most states, but they are expensive. About $1600-1800 for a decent setup. I've looked into it but most municipalities around me use Ka band radar.

Why don't you just do the speed limit and not have this problem.

Lol

Hahaha. That's the key. The RD should be an aid, not a dependent. I got one for free in college when my drives home for the holidays were 900 miles and it's easy to be cruising and then look down to see you're going 90. That was in an '01 Cadillac DTS. I use it more as a way to not get stupid tickets for going like 41 in a 35 or so I known when I can get on it a little bit if the roads are clear. I used to drive like an asshole all the time, but that gets old and makes driving stressful all the time.
