I think a lot of it has to do with the tune. I know the frpp cams have specific instruction regarding timing.

Louie,

Andy at TMS has the hot rods nailed tune wise. I'm guessing you would have him tune it? He would probably give you a good base tune till you got on the dyno.

Hey dumbasses,my remark was aimed at Haslett, or whatever his name was;were advertised as no tuning required. Of course they need a tune..duh...

Wow..you are calling everyone dumbasses's yet you can't read my name to get it it right? What's the matter, too many letter's?

Why don't you just stop now with the name calling...this is not going to be good for you.

When the FRPP Hot Rod cams first came out they WERE advertised as a no tune required..those of us that have been around for a while and have been doing this for more than a second know this.

I like hotrods because I don't have to buy valve springs and such. If these are easy to instal I will get some. Probably get them used?

He is correct, Ford Racing did advertise no tuna when the Hot Rods came out. With a all stock car, stock air box you did not need a re-tune based on what Ford Racing said. I did the HR's 3 years ago and picked up @30 rwhp. My first tune showed about a 7 hp. increase. Later we called Ford and got the numbers for a more effective tune and got @30 more when it was tuned correctly.

Originally, the Hot Rods were advertised as no tune. You could put them in, but you'd have idle dips and little driveability quirks, as well as a mediocre performance increase. As long as you get the right person to dial in the cams who has worked with them alot, the idle/driveability should be perfect and the power increase will be alot better. It's all in how you dial in VCT.

We do probably sell and tune 10-20 sets of Hot Rod cams each week this time of year, and are extremely familiar with those cams. If you have absolutely any questions about the calibration, the performance, the driveability, let me know!

Just got my tunes from you guys for the HRs, Chris, I can't wait to put them on the car once the cams are in!

I think the tool is the wedge that holds the the timing chain still? I really want to do these cams.

Nope, no spring tool required....you loosen the cam cap bolts in sequence a 1/4 turn at a time to relieve the spring pressure evenly and they come right off.

If you want to buy the wedge tool you can but I have done 4-5 of them without it, just used a piece of garden hose wedged in between the crank and the timing chains. Plus we marked the phasers in 3 different spots to ensure they were in time/lined up.

So have any of you done a fox body 302 cam swap? Is the 4.6 3v easier to do a swap than the old pushrod 5.0's

I did one on my 94 5.0, I think they are easier since you don't have to worry about the pushrods seating in the rockers...plus you don't have to remove the radiator to get the crank pulley off!

True story I hate removing all that crap. If all you have to do on the 3v is remove the plugs and valve cover and cap bolts ect that isn't that bad. The big headache will be those pesky spark plugs. I am going to do the hotrods I think, then I will do a blower once I sell my 660 raptor quad

Unless you are changing your plugs due to time there you don't need to pull the plugs..you can turn the motor over by hand with the plugs in.

It's a little tougher. If you have new phaser bolts (we sell them fairly cheap) since they're TTY bolts, the timing chain wedge tool, and a good write-up to follow - you can do it yourself. If you've never broken into a modular motor before, I'd let someone else do it if you can't afford to screw something up or if you need it done quickly, etc. The only way to learn is to dig in, but it's all about comfort level...
