I'd be asking how that broke......and when the chains jumped......did anything come into contact with the pistons?

Is it possible a tensioner did fail, causing the chains to jump, causing PTV......and that broke your key way?

Just throwing it out there, you should probably check it all out while you ave it torn down.....

While you have it open, you can prime the engine and check the seals on the tensioners.

Kind of where I was headed.

The chains didn't jump. It broke because the TFS crank gears are two piece. The first gear put way to much stress on the thin part of the key that rides just above the crank. Thankfully it was only causing driver side Cam to be off a degree or two. I already bore scoped the motor to check everything out.

Yeah, while I'd be happy if that was the problem at this point....I fear it's not the problem and just part of the result of the real problem. I don't see how a turbo car could snap a keyway....unless it was not installed correctly ( not sure if that's even possible).....or that timing sprocket you got had something to do with it?

If you are going back with those gears you need to get them set and then remove them and pin them in three spots so they are solid.

Damn, glad you found it but this is not a good thing as Willy and Stroker have suggested. Doesn't somebody make a double keyway pulley ? If I recall correctly Mihovetz was doing this way back in the late 90s when running 9s was cool in a 2800# car. Wow Modulars have come a long way lol

I had my crank and balancer ground for the second key way but, did not do the crank gear as didnt feel the need at the time. I did it for my Procharger since the balancer is only on the crank about 3/4" with my Kellogg crank. Not sure if the fac crank is the same or not, never measured it.

Wow, lots of good info in here now. I never thought the timing system would be my biggest worry of my build, but with Buzz's tensioners and this, I am starting to wonder.

As I'm reading more there was supposed to be a spacer installed with the TFS sprockets.. my kit did not come with the spacer... this would have put the sprockets on the meaty part of the key...

So with the keyway broken, the gears would not have been spinning with the motor correct? Or was it still wedged in there enough to make them turn?

It was still wedged enough to turn with the motor.. just loose enough to make noise and throw timing off ever so slightly

I have a question for you guys with all this cam talk. I am a little bit overwhelmed with the thought of degreeing cams with lockouts and an adjustable gear. WOuld a person if essentially the same setup be better off to go with a set of custom cams with a little retard built into them and lockouts, or keep the stock cams and go with limiters? Would the BBR stage 2 cams be able to be run straight up with lockouts or would you have to degree some retard with them(as I have seen some turbo guys using them)?

Here is a pic of mine. That spacer is about 3/16-1/4 inch.

Uh oh, really happy for you Matt, but Uh oh.

I have the same sprockets in mine, crap.

Did yours have the spacer?
