My throw out bearing rattles when I'm in neutral and have depressed the clutch and its hot....once I press the clutch pedal the rattle stops. Check if your does that ( press the clutch pedal and see if the rattling stops).

I had a similar thing happen that I could never pin point for about 6 months until I had to change out rear tires and found my tpms sensor had broken off and was being thrown around inside the tire. Sensor light never came on so never guessed that. May want to rule that out

Okay so it when warms up it does it. Turn car off and gone then back after a bit? I had this tin can rattle before my whole driver cat guts blew out. Sounded like the tab of a soda can rattling in the can.

I have a thread somewhere on here about it. But would be fine then show up when it warmed up. I'd shut car off and turn on and gone then would be back shortly.

Maybe take the midpipe off and shake it. I'll see if I can find my thread and link here. But was just the cat getting ready to crap itself.

Okay so yesterday we were trying to diagnose it, I have to actually drive the car around to warm it up get it to make the noise so I did that the we lifted it in the air and I couldn't replicate the noise while it was it the air but as soon as I drove it after that it made the noise. The noise hasn't been replicated in neutral yet either. It only happens when the engine I bog the engine while taking off or driving very slow. The noise is not dependent on AC or any gears, doesn't seem like suspension either because I can't hear it while rolling in neutral. So with all that info we were leaning towards it being a pilot bearing or throwout bearing that's going bad, but I think it's very possible that it could be the cats because I had a bad exhaust leak and I took it to the muffler shop and it was leaking towards the back about a foot before each muffler and the mufflers themselves were rusted and leaking exhaust. After we cut the mufflers off it was very obvious that they were shot because small black chunks fell out of them. They were toast. I didn't bother telling the muffler shop guys about the noise because I didn't expect them to diagnose it for me. So since the mufflers were so bad I imagine it's possible that the cats are just as bad and could be causing the rattle. I'll read your post and do another inspection and then update. The cats were one of the first things I thought it could be so I'm not doubting it.

Does the sound change with speed? @124K, it could be many things, and as it has been said, hard to guess without hearing it. I would find a small incline, shut the engine off, and start coasting down hill. If you can duplicate the noise, check the Ujoints. When they start to go, they can make a clicking sound that increases with speed. And usually show up at slow speeds first.

I would think you would feel the vibration of a bad u joint, but maybe not. I would call a bad u joint a clanging noise. It appears you have isolated it to a driveline issue, light load, at take off. Is it only while you let the clutch out, or only after its fully released? Does the clutch slip if you drive aggressively. Do you ever hear it during gear changes? Does the noise change with vehicle speed or engine speed, or not at all? I hate to say take the transmission out it that isn't it.

My transmission makes a knocking rattling noise in neutral w/ clutch out, but I have a spec stage 3 clutch and urethane motor mounts so I don't worry about it.

Ujoints failing almost always make some type of noise before a vibration shows up. That has been my personal experience.

Can you try getting a video of it? might help diagnose it

Your description of the sound is pretty much classic for bad u-joint bearings.

I've been on a vacation for the past few days and I am away from the car so I haven't been able to do more tests. I could not replicate the noise while rolling slowly in neutral. The noise slowly goes away as I start going faster from taking off, at normal and high speeds you can't hear it. I do believe that the noise stops immediately when I push the clutch in but I need to retest this to be sure.
