Surely the manufacturers will find a way to recycle the Ni and Li used in their batteries in order to limit the environmental impact of mining those elements.

Right now, it takes 20 lbs of used Li to get just 1 lb of good LI...which is why it's not being recycled.

It gets better. Electric motors at all 4 x corners, and no tranny at all. Drag radials on all 4 x corners. ECU monitors wheel spin. All 4 x corners 'talk' to each other..... = zero wheel spin. Ultimate
drag car.
Got it.

Driver skill optional. Incentive to get any better as a driver nonexistent.

Its funny. They preach man made climate change and how my muscle car is affecting the weather. #1. They can't tell ya what the weather is going to do 3 days from now. But if i let my car warm up 20yrs from now the temp is going to be .02 deg warmer. LOL. 2. We Re supposed to drive electric to save the environment. Yet electic cars being made is more detrimental to the environment than driving an internal combustion engine. Not to mention coal plants and gas plants are whats charging them.

The biggest problem that electric cars have to face is their power source. Current battery technology isn't enough, it's expensive and horribly damaging to the environment to obtain the materials to build them, and then they have to be replaced every five years or so at an astronomical price. When they can figure out a good way to power the darn things, something that can be recharged/refueled in 10 minutes and go 300 miles and not cost a fortune to do so they will have a winner. Until then electric cars are just toys...but then again, so were all cars at one time.

IMO, if 'greenies' think they can change the WX, they are beyond delusional.

If say an entire neighborhood were to go to 100% electric cars/trucks....and 2 x vehicles per home, 300-600 homes, every power transformer would be burnt to a crisp... (they are typ way over fused).

The numbers just don't add up. Power capacity would have to be tripled as an absolute bare minimum. That upgrading process alone would be the biggest / massive project since WW-2. Then toss in quadrupling the power generation capacity...... IE: more nukes / coal + natural gas electric plants... + associated infrastructure / towers etc..... to deliver the energy.

Elon Musk sez he can charge a 80 kwh battery in 20 mins. Time for grade school maths. 240 kw required for that job. (0-100%). Ain't gonna happen. (960 solar panels required, if one was really daft).

The best viable option (for cities) is a hybrid.

On these 100% electric cars, you will be damned lucky to get 60-70% capacity after 6-7 years.

I agree 100% that the battery storage/battery recharge hurdle is the main issue.

Followed closely by the production and distribution of the needed power to run them. All these pie in the sky dreams of being "off" fossil fuels in 20 years or so is laughable.

Hydrogen would have been great as a fuel but it takes a lot of energy to split the water molecule into hydrogen and oxygen, is expensive to store, and is potentially explosive. The energy to manufacture hydrogen also comes largely from fossil fuels so there's still a carbon footprint.
It does have potential for the future if it can be manufactured at low cost using renewable energy.

This always seems to pop up in the context of having no "downsides". I'm not convinced that that's even possible. Everything in engineering involves a compromise of some sort.

As a thought exercise . . . when you extract energy from the wind, what might you be giving up either downwind or at a later time?

Pretty sure I learned that you neither create nor destroy energy. Just change it from one form to another and lose some in the process to other unusable forms. EVERYTHING requires an exchange. You give something there to get something here.

Yeah no means of electricity generation comes without cost, be it financial or environmental. The focus is currently on slowing down the rate of climate change by reducing the quantity of CO2 we're pumping into the atmosphere.
Wind energy is converted into kinetic energy of the wind turbines, which is then converted into electrical energy. The wind, at least, is clean. Same goes for solar panels. The only environmental cost is the sight of wind turbines and solar panels. There's no pollution and that can only be good.
The only other alternative is for mankind to reduce its energy dependence but with the world population growing exponentially, that's asking the impossible.
