Just makes me paranoid I broke one i'm nervous to break the second one.
It's beginning to become obvious that the limit of the 5R55S isn't much more than 600rwhp, if that. I think anything north of 550 is suspect, but some have made it to 650ish. Anyway you look at it, once you start making 10-sec type power, then all bets are off. I don't expect mine to live forever, and I'm already planning on replacing it with a 4R70W if/when it breaks. I can't stick my head in the sand and hope it won't happen... because it will... someday.

And call me a skeptic, but a 5R55S capable of handling 1200hp is ludicrous.

I agree 100% but I'm not even going to come close in explaining what that really ment. Tony is a great guy so I won't bash him or his service, I only stated that the guy who pulled the tranny out and re-installed the new one did notice a difference in input shafts. Tony did state he made some changes so the problem wouldn't happen again. Tony also said he got the input shaft warrantied so that was the only part I didn't have to pay for.

I can say the car hits each gear harder then before the few times I did go wot I felt a nice solid shift so the car does feel different(in a good way) and I am running the exact same tune as before...

I know I am pushing all the limits of even the best built 5r55s in the world on my race tune with a 4000lb + car . That beeing said this spring I will push that limit and post exactly what happens if anything if good or bad . That dont mean Tony did anything wrong if it breaks at this level becouse I know I am going to be pushing it , but at 500 rw I would have a lot of questions to ask . One thing to remember though is when you up the hp you up the chance of breaking shit and we all know that to be true so with that being said I may very well find the limit of the built 5r55s in the spring, but that is still to be found with proper tunning. IMO

Keep in mind some guys have broke them while N/A... so it's still a crap shoot, IMO.

I guess my problem was 8 months ago when I bought tony's first trans a bunch of you guys were pushing 600+ or so on it with no problems, I had no idea you guys felt this way I would have went for the 4R70W from the start.

I'm not worried about breaking stuff as everything broke once already I hate breaking things over and over agian! spent almost double what the 4R70W would have cost. Live and learn..

I guess the good point that is coming out now for people looking to go big is go right to the 4R70W and stay away from 5r55 all together.

I spoke with Len Bertrand of LenTech this morning at length about this topic. His professional opinion is that the 5R55S will handle 500-600 rwhp for "a little while." Perhaps 100 runs or so....give or take 25 runs. Example: JDM finally broke the 5R55S in their Sterling car after 138 runs. We'll see how well the TCI transmission works in that car. Back to Len....his idea is that once you are in the 650-800 rwhp range you should seriously start gathering the money for the 4R70W conversion. At that level....it's a crap shoot every time you put your right foot into the firewall.

I realize this thread is 13 months old.... so I'd like to see if there is any further details/experiences with the TCI 5R55S Super Street Fighter.

I'm researching a potential transformational build for my vert, the goal being low 10s, I realize auto is the way to go. However I'd like the sleeper look and the 5 forward gears, so that highway cruising is more comfortable.

The TCI website still has the discrepancy on the HP limits of tranny, I've messaged them and I am awaiting a response.

Does anyone have one of their trannys with some good mileage and track passes on it?

Message Bullet. He has one. I believe he uses the car out on the streets ( don't know how much ) and has quite a few high 10 second passes on it.

from what i have read, obviously have no experience with it, mid 500rwhp is the absolute limit on even a built 5R55 trans.

Dave, PM me and I'll give you my cell #. I had my 5R55 redone twice with supposedly bullet proof stuff, capable of handling well into the 800hp range. Alas, second time it snapped the input shaft and that was on the street mildly getting on the car. I just had the FB transmission put in. And if you have time we can get together and I can show what they did. It came out really well. I had the car out this past weekend beating the piss out of it and so far so good. FB is pricey, but for what the 5R55 cost me for two rebuilds I could have the FB in the car with quite a bit of cash left over. If you put the two units side by side and just look at the input shaft size that alone will tell you how weak the 5r55 is.

Tbird you're gonna love it. I went with the optional gears for mine and it's a totally different car. I wish I would have done this in the first place.

I've been running mine for a little over a year now with zero problems.. I wouldn't be able to tell you how many passes I have on it but it's quite a few as well as several street runs. Hell my BAP failed before this transmission did. I would go with an FB though if I could do it over as now that will be another thing I have to add to my list.

that's great info. Thank you.

would you say you have more then 50 passes? and ballpark how many street miles.

if you have had zero issues why would you go with a FB if you were doing it over?
