Anyone in Orange Country MUST go to this. It is $70 for all day autocross at El Toro Airbase. Only 5 cars showed up. Basically no wait for runs.

This was basically my first autocross with my car. I have done road course at fontana and another autocross with a Rx-8.

The five cars were: Turbo Miata, S2k, Tiburon, G35 and my GT.

My car was consistently 1-1.5 sec faster than the rest. Times were around sub 55 sec for me.

Because there were so few cars, I got to ride in each of the other cars.

Here are a few observances my passenger and I made.

Mustang's suspension is insanely twitchy relative to s2k and g35. Its fast but just twitchy everywhere. At the fast right hander I have to let off and I am really hustling the car around with oversteer then understeer then oversteer understeer.

S2000. Obviously the choice of car for autocross. He was running stock with 255/235 sticky tires. He was obviously braking slightly later than me. Felt very stable through corners and he could power through the high speed right hander (due to not building enough speed). But stable throughout the course.

G35. I was insanely surprised at the smoothness of the car. It is not twitchy at all around corners or planting the power. It is very confidence inspiring. He was running only springs and exhaust.

You say the car was twitchy but have a bunch of suspension mods in your sig...might just be your setup.

twitchyness relative to the other cars. Its a much better setup compared to stock of course. Im pretty sure it comes down to the live axle setup. Not to bash on it or anything, because I was faster than the rest of the cars. I recently took off my stillen sway bars and although the body roll is increased slightly, I believe it became more "twitchier" after going back to stock sways. I may be looking into strano sways now :)

Watts link may be in my future now. Very curious to find out how that will make the car handle.

I dunno man. Maybe it's that we're doing two different types of racing, but "twitchy" is definitely not a word I'd use to describe the S197, stock. I've always heard the S2Ks are closer to that. Haven't driven one, though.

Agreed on all counts.

+1

My friends with s2000's always talk about their twitchy-butt cars... and I learned first-hand about it when I went out to the track 3 weekends ago to help coach a friend on his first time out.

These same friends tell me I drive a tank compared to theirs, and I couldn't agree more with the amount of under-steer issues I've had. I've started over with stock suspension and I'm trying to slowly make changes so that I can record everything that is happening.

It might be a tank, but if my stock mustang on summer tires can hang with an s2000 on all-seasons at my favorite track - I'll take it!

+1! Really, the bulk of our handling issues are related to the numb understeer at turn-in, and it really doesn't take that much to correct that... After that, it's all about chassis weight.

@Soundguy - that and transitional speed, I think. That's all damper related, really.

hey danbev, is that a typo in your sigpic?

lol..I wish I would have had some more seat time at an event like this when I did forum wars. It likely didn't help that I had all-season tires on

I think what he is refering to as "twitchy" is the ability to transfer weight with the throttle, by either pushing or releasing. The S197 has a lot more torque than either of the other cars, and thus the throttle plays a bigger part in steering the car and possibly unsettling it.

Most aftermarket tuners think having a throttle like a hair trigger is a good thing. Well, in the case of corner carver, it makes it more tricky. I've spun on slight lift on more than one occasion.

Take that fast right-hander, right before the pivot type turn. Lets say you turn in there and suddenly feel like you're going a too fast, just backing off the gas slightly can transfer weight from the rear to the front, unsettling the car and causing oversteer.

Agreed, and agreed with Grip - on some of the slow & tight corners it would feel like the car is taking forever to take a set ("forever" relative to what it feels like in faster sweepers, or better, "forever" as a measure of what I want the car to do right here /right now dammit!). Most of that is gone (turn-in is crisp and set is quick enough), but I get that feeling once and a while still (T9 on South Track at the Autobahn CC).

And SGD, what are you doing here? Shouldn't you be sippin' on a rum-runner or something right about now? :thanks

Best,
-j
