Not sure what it was, but I picked up the 725ft/lb rated impact wrench and I nailed it for a few seconds with nothing. I jumped on the breaker bar again, nothing... Oh and I had a heater (fan type) blowing on the pulleys all day long. It was warm, hotter than warm to the touch. Sprayed it some more with penetrant...

Since I was frustrated and had given up on it. I chose to drill a tiny pin hole though the center of the hex bore. I had reach that each time someone broke the torque on one of these a really loud pop was heard. So I figured it had to do something with the sealed (air-tight) pocket in there.

Anyway, I drilled away and sprayed some more penetrant in the hole. Hit it again with the impact wrench and nothing. Sigh
I was so mad I just jumped and jumped on the breaker bar...then POW!!!!!
It broke torque...

Not sure what did it... But I am ready for a beer!! :beerdrink::cheers::beerchug3::thumb2:

Thanks for all the help guys!!

This POS of pulley setup is not going back on the motor!!!!

Haha... thanks guys!!

Just posted on my other thread (JDM 302E Owners...) about my exhaust valves, just feel I'd get more replies there than here.
Post #198 (http://www.s197forum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=106363&page=10)

So here are pictures of the exhaust valves; what do you guys think?

I sent these pictures to a GM race engine builder (builds Buick Grand Nationals) and the first thing he said was:
Mind you I have never told him I found puddles of oil in the intake side and on top of the pistons.

Anyone else have any comments?

I believed I have found the source of all my oil issues: Post #247 http://www.s197forum.com/forum/showthread.php?p=1948407#post1948407

Well... The mystery is finally over.

I just did a leak down-test on the motor. Something that I paid a shop to do earlier last year. sigh
Like always, you want something done right, you got to do it yourself.

Anyway, here are the results:

Cylinder 1 - 90 psi = 10%
Cylinder 2 - 97 psi = 3%
Cylinder 3 - 82 psi = +15%
Cylinder 4 - 86 psi = 14%
Cylinder 5 - 98 psi = 2%
Cylinder 6 - 82 psi = +15%
Cylinder 7 - 90 psi = 10%
Cylinder 8 - 96 psi = 4%
(The source pressure was 100 psi.)

Obviously this is pretty bad. But how does a motor in this condition still make +600rwhp!!?? Shouldn't it be down on power?

Just to make sure, this is how I performed the test:
-Set source pressure to 100 psi.
-Set the cam lobes to 11 and 1 0'clock.
-Held the breaker bar to keep the crank for spinning for dear life!!!
-Connected the spark plug supply hose to the leak-down tester, verified 100 psi source settled, and maintained for 7 seconds or so (until reading settled and maintained).

Wow...what a frustrating year!!!
I bought new heads for nothing...although, these heads are better and will provide a little more power. lol

I wouldn't be too concerned about the pickup debris. That's why the screen is there. The cylinder walls look pretty smooth from here but it's hard to tell in photos.

They are very smooth...
Is that not supposed to be?

What worries me is the chunk of metal i found in the screen.

You should see crosshatching. This is the bore on my old motor with 25,000 miles on it. Yours might be ok, camera angles play a big part in seeing it correctly in a picture.

Mine are not that obvious. They are very faint.
My old motor with 64K miles had more obvious cross-hatching.

So your engine was assembled by JDM with that tensioner seal gasket ripped and protruding?

I would make sure I found the source of that chunk of metal.

Gerald,

This piece of metal you found, is the where you found it sitting right on top of the screen and also is it magnetic? The gasket on those tensioners are susceptible to tearing like that and often happen from movement while the engine is running. We have seen them like coming out of other engines that have been run and also when removing the tensioner off then engine. Either way, I don't see this causing any oil pressure or related issues. The only thing that you could have noticed is after the car sat for a while the tensioner would bleed down and cause a little chain slap until the engine built pressure.
