298 stroker with 127500 cams

Hey all, I did use the search function ahead of time but couldn't quite find the answer I was looking for. I am buying a Livernois 298 stroker engine with 10cc pistons (9:71-stock CR). I ordered 127500 cams for it and was wondering if any of you have used these cams with a similar engine setup. I am mainly concerned about valve clearance, being a stroker motor does it make a difference compared to a stock stroke motor? Also, do these cams have to be degreed if using lockouts locking them at full advance?

My recommendation would be to get the Livernois springs and run their limiters, instead of the lockouts. My cams are the same lift and duration as the 127500's, just ground with a 115 LSA for my turbos. Livernois told me the limiters would be fine with these cams and their springs. I haven't had any problems with this setup and mine runs fine. If you want to run lockouts with these came, I would recommend installing them about 6° retarded. You will loose a lot of top end without the ability to retard the cams.

I will mention the retarding the cams deal to my tuner, I ordered comp 26125-24 springs with them a long with retainers.

This is what my domed piston looked like at 6 degrees retarded with 127500's. .080 clearance. I don't see a 10cc dish coming out of the hole. You will have plenty of clearance.

Thanks for replying to my PM also. I am sure he will chime in, if anyone needs more details let me know.

I think that Earl hit it just about right on. Because of your springs you should lock the phasers out. Retard the cams with the tfs crank gears and you should be fine. 6-8* should be about right.

The stock deck clearance is .008". A stroker should have the proper compression height to go with the stroke and rods so that the deck height is at or near stock. Provided the pistons are clearanced for a 3v it will be fine.

The 127500 specs are fairly popular for semi custom cams. Earl has a set with 115 lsa. I have a set with 113 lsa and a 108 icl (normal 127550 icl is 102). They work great in my na motor and the 108 intake center line is where a regular set would be with 6 degrees of retard. Sometimes I wonder what 8 degrees would do for the top end airflow.

The short answer is yes, run them. They should work just fine.

That will depend on the deck and piston to bore spacing.

how would you install such cams without using the trickflow kit, in relation to the timing marks on the stock sprockets and compared to how stock cams/chains are set up? (I know how the stock marks are used normally, would any deviation from that be used)?

There are 42 teeth on the phaser sprocket and 360 degrees in a circle. 360 divided by 42 is about 8.6 degrees per tooth. It is possible to retard the cams by 8.6 degrees without having the TFS sprockets by setting it up one tooth off.

Bruce, you need to take into consideration that those are cam degrees and we always talk in crank degrees, so...

I just looked at a phaser. As you know each chamber is worth 60 degrees of retard. Only 3.5 teeth cover that amount of area. I've been giving out bad advice about this for quite awhile. One tooth would be about 17 degrees.

The crank sprocket has 21 teeth so one tooth there would be about 17 degrees also.

I would definetly get an adjustable gear and retard them some. I had a set locked out full advance. Power peaked and basically flat-lined just north of 4k rpm IIRC. I do have a turbo car though

Yes. I've seen people ask about installing them retarded and even the sales info on lockouts says it's possible but nobody would ever install 3v cams 60 degrees retarded.

Are you going to get the tfs gears?

My tuner Bob Kurgan recommended them advanced and said he has never really had any luck tuning them retarded.

I'm talking about full advance or full retard. If you are locking them out I'd go with the 6 degrees mentioned above. The 108 icl on my setup is working great.
