This thing will be way badass with a supercharger on it or twin turbo.

I know the pistons on the BOSS are forged aluminum. The article linked above says "forged connecting rods". This article I found http://wot.motortrend.com/6677081/a...er-v-8-torture-tested-at-the-track/index.html Says "sinter-forged" connecting rods.

Sinter-forged is another name for Powder Metal rods. PM rods are what are in the GT500. They have tremendous torsional strength, but don't like being stretched by high RPM's.

From what I've seen, the 5.0 gt rods are Powder Metal rods, and some refer to them as forged. Then we have the aftermarket forged steel rods which are the rods we all want for boosted apps. From what I read in ford's initial release, the rods are unchanged, only the cams are different. I'm not sure, so maybe we can figure things out here...

Yes Powder Metal rods are technically forged. Are the regular 5.0 pistons forged aluminum as well?

No, and no. The regular 5.0 pistons are not forged. They're hypers. Only the Boss has forged pistons. I'm pretty sure the Boss has a different Forged rod as well, but not enough info yet to know for sure.

I thought he was asking about rods, my bad. The 5.0 are not forged steel, but they are powder forged or whatever it's called. though the mags could be wrong, wouldn't be the first time. I don't know for sure, so I was hoping someone would know for sure.

Jay Leno takes a look at the 2012 Ford Mustang Boss 302 Laguna Seca –

Sure, Jay Leno has some pretty varied taste when it comes to cars, but the apple of his eye is likely his '66 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350. He's owned the car for the better part of a quarter of a century, and it routinely comes up when he speaks about the essence of a good-driving car. It's fitting, then, that Leno was on hand for the debut of the 2012 Ford Mustang Boss 302 Laguna Seca Edition. With 440 horsepower from a naturally-aspirated 5.0-liter V8, track-oriented aerodynamics and a lively 3.73 rear axle ratio, this sucker is designed for some serious flogging.

Leno managed to corner Tom Barnes, the vehicle engineering manager for Mustang, trackside for a quick rundown of what the new Boss and the Laguna Seca edition are all about during the latest episode of Jay Leno's Garage.

Now, the really interesting part of this whole video is when Leno lets it slip that the Boss will feature a unique tech-laden key. Barnes wasn't willing to elaborate on the details, saying that more information would be released at a later date. see the full video for yourself below.

The "rumor" is that the Laguna cars will also have a "red key" that will switch to an "off road-no warranty" tune that will raise the redline and change engine tuning to be more inline with the Boss 302R cars. Personally I got to thinking, and since the cars are not delivered with the splitters, they are shipped to you, maybe they will ship cut-outs as well, which could also possible be actiuvated by the "red key".
That is suposedly why the boss cars have the red roof and accents, to match the "red key".
Of course, since the hard parts are the same, there is no reason why you couldn't get the regualr boss tuned to match the "key" tune fromt he Laguna cars. :)

They are powdered forged rods, no different than the GT and certainly nowhere near as strong as real forged rods.

From Ford's media site:

What most people don’t realize is that engine stresses increase exponentially as engine speeds rise,” explains Harrison. “So moving up from GT’s 7,000 rpm redline required significant re-engineering of many different parts. Sacrificing reliability and usability over the GT engine was never an option.”

Some of the Boss-specific parts contributing to the Boss 302 V8’s output and durability include:

Revised composite intake system with shorter runners, inspired by Daytona Prototype racing engines, for high-rpm breathing

Forged aluminum pistons and upgraded sinter-forged connecting rods for improved strength, needed for the higher combustion pressures and engine speeds

New high-strength aluminum-alloy cylinder heads with fully CNC-machined ports and chambers for exceptional high-rpm airflow without sacrificing low-speed torque

Lightened valvetrain components to provide excellent dynamic performance up to speeds well above the engine redline

Sodium-filled exhaust valves for improved heat dissipation

Race-specification crankshaft main and rod bearings for higher load capability and improved high-speed durability

5W50 full-synthetic oil with engine oil cooler for improved oil pressure and longer-lasting lubrication during extreme racing conditions

Revised oil pan baffling for improved oil control under racing conditions and during cornering loads greater than 1.0 g

The key word in that is "sinter-forged" which is another word for Powdered Metal rods. Now the strength of these rods is yet to be determined, but historically based on other ford Engines (01+ 7.3 diesels, GT500 rods) PM rods can withstand very heavy compression loads, but tend to have a weak point of high rpm operation. Now since this motor has a 7,500rpm redline and this same motor in the BOSS302R see's north of 8,000rpm, maybe a different manufacturing technique or improved materials have solved this issue. In addition, this "red key" that is rumored to take the Laguna Seca tune very close to BOSS302R spec, including increased RPM, we have less to worry about. Only time will tell.
