Hi Folks,

If you owned a stock 2006 GT 5 speed and had about $1000 to increase horse power, what would you buy? I am considering selling my old motorcycle (for safety) and want a little more excitement out of the car.

Thanks,
Stan

You might be able to piece together a used eaton m90 supercharger setup for that budget or a few bucks more. They are out of vogue but still solid performers.

Thanks! I assumed that would be way out of my reach.

Longtubes, o/r mid pipe and custom 93 tune. Will wake the car up and pick up about 50rwhp.

The JLT 3 CAI, Steeda underdrive pulleys, DIY charge motion delete plates, and custom tune will just come within your budget.
LT headers & midpipe will cost you $800 minimum plus 6 hours labor (~$600) if you have to pay a professional to install them, and that for a mere 15-18rwhp gain. An offroad X-pipe, if legal in your state, is certainly a much cheaper option.
Any form of forced induction apart from N2O ain't gonna happen for a grand. Budget at least $4500 for supercharging or turbocharging your motor.

The reality is there is no such thing as a cheap $1000 power upgrade that will make substantial gains. I'd do 3.73 maybe 4.10 gears, a quality tune and an axle back. Save what's left (which won't be much) for a forced induction setup later.

I think I saw an M90 system going for 1500.

I had one for a few years, it was fantastic. The car turns into what it always should have been. Tires on fire. Nice whining noise if you find someone selling a used 2.49 pulley system/cai for peanuts. (I have one kicking around. Nobody wants it.)

Just save your money and enjoy the car. Pick bottles for a while. Gears/etc... won't make enough of a difference.

I did long tube headers, CAI and a tune for about 1000. Not sure that the CAI did much of anything, but the tune and headers made a bit of a difference. If nothing else, you'll at least sound like you are going fast.

That's a high estimate IMO. If you shop around you can find way better deals. I bought 304SS JBA's for $500 and you can get their off road H pipe for $150 from anyone who sells it. Find something used and it's even cheaper.

Even then, by the time you add O2 sensor harness extenders plus $600 labor to install the headers/midpipe, the total cost will be ~$1300 and you'd still only gain 16rwhp.

Yeah but why assume someone will be paying labor to install long tubes? And come on, most LT's come with O2 extenders.

Because not everyone has the time, tools, a garage, and a lift (yes you could use jackstands and lie on your back).

Don't listen to these sad fucks. /Nitrous

:D Admittedly nitrous does give you the biggest bang for your buck. The only problems are that you only have the extra power when you go WOT, and that the party's over when the bottle runs out.
Most people would like to feel the power increase all the time so I'd say if you're looking for 400+rwhp, save up $4500+ for a supercharger or turbo kit with everything you'll need (including tune) to run it safely.
