techco butterfly ram air hood. who carries them?

This looks great to me, and is a really nice example of modernized retro stuff. But the price is just far too out there for what is essentially, as someone said, a pretty show. It just looks cool for revving, and is still kinda small so you have to be looking at it to be able to tell the butterflies are actually working.

Here is a piece I found on the one Steve Saleen used on his anniversary mustang. It was in a 5.0 magizine a month or two ago.Those dragster-like "throttles" are a fun bit of trickery SMS calls the Red Butterfly Induction System. Yes, the red butterflies open and close in response to driver input; the command comes from an electronic controller and the power through a stepper motor in the hoodscoop. SMS engineers were sure to make the butterflies open when rapping the throttle at a stoplight, so they're a dead cinch to impress. The entire system is separate from the powertrain control module-there's a switch on the throttle pedal-so emissions legality isn't affected.The more mechanically astute will realize that no, the red butterflies aren't the actual throttle body, but rather a nifty, operable cold-air intake. In practice, air passes through the butterflies, runs through a duct built into the hood, then through a separate duct forward to the cavity surrounding the open-element air filter in the usual spot behind the driver-side headlight. The air then passes through the air filter, an SMS 100mm mass air meter, and the throttle body atop the Saleen supercharger. SMS is already offering the air filter, air dam, and 100mm mass air as a cold-air kit. They're the start of what promises to be a full line of hot-rod and appearance parts.

wow its electronic.....cool but way too expensive and i wonder what the power hook up looks like....anyone have an under hood shot? Also, how would it work through driver input if its not connected to the pcm in any way? Does it read a spike in voltage maybe if its connected to the battery? Or maybe you need to tap into the drive by wire...wires...wtf lol

There sounds like there might just be something like a switch with a variable resistor mounted to the throttle pedel, thefurther down you push the go pedel ther butterflies open. It said that it was not connected to the pcm in any way. I'll try to post a under the hood picture, its shows the engine bay duct work but not the underside of the hood.

I put some small led's behind the butterflys so you can just see the outline when they are closed. It looks pretty cool.

This is an awesome hood. It is pricey, but I have had mine since April and do not in any way regret buying it. I get compliments on it everywhere I go, and have yet to pass another one on the street. I put some small led's behind the butterflys so you can just see the outline when they are closed. It looks pretty cool.

Do you have any more pics of your car? I love that hood, but have never seen one on a "real" car.

Kinda wish it didn't have the heat extractors though.

I used to hate that hood but now it's really growing on me. Of course they probably are all sold by now.

Here are some more shots of the hood plus 1 of my car.

I put some blue led's behind the butterflys, it looks awesome at night.

In the underside picture, you can see the access panel to get to the butterflys if you need to, the cord coming out the back of the hood is the power for the butterflys and leds. The Butterflys are actually activated by a microswitch mounted to the throttle.

You can also see to the right where the air exits the hood into ductwork that feeds the air into the factory airbox.

If your budget allows it, I highly recommend this hood. The only issue I had was right at the headlights, the hood edge was off just a bit, but an easy fix. For the price, it should have been a perfect fit, but any aftermarket part I have ever bought was never ready for paint, at least not up to my standards .

Yeah, I wasn't to sure about the lights either. My daughter, whom we lost in a traffic accident just after she turned 16 always like the lights, so I guess you could kinda say I did it for her. It does look nice at night though, you can just barely see the outline of the butterflys. It is a little more noticable than I would normally like though when the butterflys are open.

I have heard they went under, and I have also heard that they are just relocating the business. I don't know for sure. But their website still advertises this hood:
