Had a good day. Set sixth driven gear and shaft end play. Installed bronze fork pads and close up the main case. Shift rod engages first four gears and neutral like it should.

Decided that I hate VHT caliper paint and that I'll never use it again

I used the VHT header paint for my...headers. I've never really had great experiences with painting headers. So, I modified an old electric oven to bake them. I built a sheet metal box the size of the oven door when it's fully open. So the door became the floor of the oven extension. I made the whole thing double walled and stuffed it with insulation. Made a lift off lid. Then I baked the headers for the directed time. That was 4 years ago. The paint has held up surprisingly well. I'm just now starting to see some rust specs coming thru, but that was only after driving it once on a salted road last winter in CT. So, if you have access to an oven, it will definitely help. Not sure what it would do to the seals on the calipers, but I think they would get hotter on the car than most ovens would get.

Today saw fifth, sixth and reverse added to the tail end. Thermal fit a couple gears and they slipped right on. No more parts to go inside.

All buttoned up and tested each shifter position. Also verified the measurements for the throw out bearing travel (preload).

There is nothing wrong with the clutch so I will reuse it. The setup is; McLeod lightened steel flywheel and street extreme single disc clutch and pressure plate. Using a new McLeod throw out unit I have 3 9/16” form the transmission mounting face to the throw out face. I have 3 1/8” from the pressure plate fingers to the tranny mounting face on the bellhouse. 7/16” is not enough travel so I added a 1/2” spacer for 15/16” of preload. My clutch pedal should not be on the floorboard.

I'm also installing a Magnum XL with an RXT and the lightened steel flywheel. I came up with 3 3/16" from the mounting face to fingers giving me 1/2" preload. I am also planning to tentatively use a 1/2" spacer to put me around 1" total. So basically the same measurements as you. I'm worried about over extending the slave with the 13/14 GT500 master if I don't put a spacer in. You'll probably finish before me, please post up your results!

What caused you to have to rebuild the transmission?

Edit: I think we are going to have to bend line on our slaves to clear the bell housing with the spacer in there.

Hi Brick.
My experience with just under 1/2” preload was that I had to push the pedal to the floor or sometimes it would nibble second on an up shift. After about 1,000 miles I could not speed shift into second and sometimes it would nibble second on a downshift. I thought it was a synchro problem and also there might be flex in the clutch pedal and bracket from the stiff pressure plate. What I found was nibbled gear and synchronizer teeth and burnt, transferred metal on the backside of second gear. Weird, the bearings looked perfect but that gear had gouged the shaft and that raised ring on the shaft is full of cracks. Nobody I have spoke with has seen this failure before so I don’t know what I did wrong.
I used Tremec’s brand lube. This time I’m using Mobile 1. I will use the 1/2” spacer behind the slave so I am sure to have all the travel I can get. If this doesn’t work I will try the GT500 master cylinder I have read about.

Got the tranny installed and filled with Mobile 1 synthetic ATF. Driveshaft and safety loop bolted in and the clutch pumped several times. Feels pretty good and the snow has been melting all day.

Making progress on my front brake job / painted calipers project.
Had to strip the calipers a second time, then switched to a self-etching primer, followed by the color, the new decal, and then the clear.

Thanks. I used some Dupli-Color self-etching primer I had around the house, then the same VHT paint and clear that I already had.

Got my brakes finished and took the car for a road test - the new oil pressure sensor doesn't seem to be working right, all I'm getting is lines on the gauge display.
