i'm not trying to highjack, but i think this question can still be somewhat on topic...

is it possible to use a 5.4 block and our 3v heads and all over parts? i've done searching here for info but i'm not getting any answers. this way the block isn't stroked and is bigger then 4.6 big bore block. if i'm way off or this is a stupid question, i'm sorry... still learning, lol

Yes and no. Yes to the heads. No to the intake. A 5.4 is the same bore as a 4.6. The block has a taller deck height and the stroke is longer.

ok, thanks... but wouldn't that be worst stroke then a 302 by some of the points some of the guys are making? LOL, not very techie is that question.

The 5.4 is undersquare, more so than a 4.6 stroker. However the block has enough deck height to keep the pistons in the bore.

An undersquare motor just goes against everything I was told about motors while growing up. The 5.4 is a good example of how well they work despite what I was told.

The real topic in this discussion is how well a stroked 4.6 will last long term and if more cylinder wear is worth the extra cubic inches. If it were me I'd go big bore stock stroke but that's just the influence my dad still has on me from 30 years ago.

Bringing back an old topic...

How are some of these strokers holding up now that we've had several months to put some miles on them?

Also, I saw in here 16.5 mpg at 75mph...do you lose THAT much fuel economy with a stroker??

I can't say much about the tech stuff...I read it all and I think I understood about 1/3 of it lol. Gonna re-read though because there was REAL good stuff in there!!

Had mine in place for a year about 9000 miles on it now. No issues and last road trip to Carlisle from E-town NJ and back we averaged about 26 mpg at 75 /80

I've put about 14k miles on mine since it was built. My mileage isn't great due to locking out the VCT and not degreeing my cams....maybe 17.5 on the highway.

A guess on mileage but more than 10K I'm sure.
Fuel consumption is I think around 19 MPG now.

Just a comment if you are looking to do one of these engines and concerned over Fuel Consumption.
(Don't do it)
There are a lot of other things that Cost Major Dollars to run one of these engines if they are up in HP (Horsepower).

If money is tight and somewhat on a strict budget.

Just saying be aware of the overall Cost ..........

Tiger, I have a DD so gas mileage isn't major but what are these other MAJOR costs you speak of? I plan on being around 550-600whp on 93 octane

The following is my {Opinion} others here on S197 I'm sure might or will be {Different}.

Upgrade the following items:

Transmission (Manual)
Clutch, flywheel
Transmission and Torque Converter (Automatic)
Rear end Axles, differential, braced differential cover
FRPP Rear End Gears like 3:73 or 4:10
Brakes in front and possibly better pads in rear
Also a set of Braided Stainless brake hoses would be a plus
High Capacity radiator for longer life if you live in a Hot State with a lot of Stop & Go traffic
If you know for sure you are going to {Keep} the car a set of Silicone Radiator Hoses
Dual GT-500 Fuel Pumps
Bigger Wheels especially in Rear. (Example 10" in Rear)
A set of 3-Gauges to Monitor things. (Better Safe than Sorry)
(1) A/F Air Fuel Ratio, (2) Boost, (3) Fuel Pressure
A Shift Light so your not constantly into the Rev-Limiter

Last Suggestion:
Do your research and pick a Performance Shop and stick with them.

The above items are for long time ownership and also for Safety.

B.C.
Clutch + Flywheel + Slave cylinder.
Good set of tires.
Good Crank Dampener.
Billet oil pump gears.
Fuel pump + injectors.
Thats about $2000 + right there.
maybe vct limiters/lockouts etc.
Gets up there quick!
There are ways to save but when you invest big bucks into your main components you should make sure all your subsystems are capable of providing reliable performance to feed the beast.

FWIW, I have a Boss 5.0 block, offset ground stock crank, and Eagle 5.85" rods. I'm close to 10k miles on it with no issues. It's been driven every day since I installed it last September and usually sees boost somewhere in that drive. It made 570/540 with low timing and 12psi. It had some bad belt slip on the dyno. As for mileage I get 12-14 around town. Stock gears and a T-56 suck going stop light to stop light. On my long road trips I get 20mpg at 80mph with the A/C blowing.

The only thing on that list I'm missing is an aftermarket tranny. I've been building the car up for this for a year or more already. Got a BAP, clutch, flywheel, tires, brakes, rims, all that shit. But good list for others to read!!
