Looking good. Like you said it's a good thing you realized you had forgot the reluctor wheel now instead of after the motor was in. At least you didn't forget to pull the retaining clips off like i did haha. I got lucky that it hit me for some reason when i was installing the followers. I get a little forgetful when i've been wrenching for 13+ hours straight.

I realized that I put the rtv on the wrong side of the gasket. It could still be enough to take care of it. If it weeps I'll pull the plug and inject rtv in the hole. There should be enough squeeze out that it would seal the very small gap.

Looks good Bruce but you built it too fast lol. I would have to stretch a project out like that nice and slow because I like the foreplay sometimes more than the climax lol! Since I don't drive my car in the winter from mid December to early March and with winter weather keeping me inside the garage my ADHD self will go crazy. So whatever FI method I end up going with needs to keep me busy from winter till spring when it's time to drop the top again. I'm going to stretch the install over the whole winter and probably irritate others in my lackadaisical approach to my build thread lol. But, it sure is fun! After that will come the Magnum XL transmission, then I'm done. I won't know what to do with myself the next winter! That's the scary part!

maybe I missed it but remind me what dish pistons did you use to get 12:1 compression?


EDIT: went back and re read. diamond flat top pistons...Do they have any valve reliefs. I am assuming the block was decked so the pistons were level at tdc with the block.

I missed this post.

The pistons have an exhaust valve relief of .075". They are sitting at .008" below the deck. I had the block decked the minimum amout needed to clean it up. The Boss block doesn't have a finished deck.

UPS slid the oil pan package delivery to Monday. Today I installed the motor mount adapters and took one header off for access. It also needed to come off so I could turn the motor upside down on the stand. It's one of those things I didn't think about when I installed the headers on the heads prior to motor assembly.

The final clearances are as follows:

Rod bearings are .0014"

Main bearings are .0016"

I had the machine shop get them as close to .0015" as possible. I told them that anything between .001" to .002" would work but I'd really like to see .0015 in a perfect world. The crank needed polishing and I supplied them with -.001" bearings and hoped for the best.

Piston to bore is .003". Final bore is 3.7005". Deck height is -.008" Diamond speced .0035" for a naturally aspirated motor and I asked for it but just noticed they are .003". I was having a hard time deciding on .0035" or .003" so it's almost a good thing. More than likely their machinist went with something more tailored to my na build. I'll have to ask them about it.

Side rod clearances are .012" for the front and .011" for the rest.

Crankshaft end play is .010".

Bruce, am I remembering right that .008 is a little deeper in the hole than what most pistons are set up for on a factory block. As in the only way that they are that deep is the fact that the boss block doesnt come with a finished deck?

.008" is fairly normal for stock. Everything is where it should be imo.

oh, for some reason i was think .002 in the hole was closer to the norm. I just cant seem to remember all these clearances.

Is the header as close to the mount as it looks, or is it the angle the picture was taken?

Kind of. It's a twice modified shelf item. That means I paid $50 extra for each mod. I bought them through cnc motorsports in Brookings, SD. They have a direct line with most of the manufacturers and have been able to get things made for me that other stores couldn't. Always at better prices too. IIRC total price was $931 for pistons and total seal rings shipped.

It's the angle.

I know the valve relief was one mod, which was the other?

The things that are different are the 3.700 bore, flat top, exhaust valve relief, and 1.200" compression height. Two of them came on a shelf piston and two were modifications. I don't know which is which. The box sticker that contains the specs says custom piston on it.

Im curious about the fitment of the pan. Awaiting results if it works ill probably use the same one on my build

The GT500 oil pan kit came today. It looks like it will work just fine. The most important part to me was the windage tray/pan gasket. The motor was spun over and there wasn't any contact.



The stock pan is sitting beside the GT500 pan. They are the same height but the GT500 pan is wider and the deep end is longer.



A quick check reveals that it should fit just fine.





It also came with longer pan bolts and a longer pick up. I'm not really sure about having an 8.5 quart capacitiy though. Right now I'm leaning toward installing the stock pan that I know will fit and only has a 6 quart capacitiy. It also has a bung on the side just in case I ever need to return oil to the pan from somewhere else.

I'd think the 8.5 quart pan would be ideal for road racing or a turbo but it's overkill for my use.

Well, you have it, so why not use it? I mean, you are building a badass engine so why not go HAM?

So in theory if it fits your stroker kit it eill fit my eagle stroker kit as well? It's a shorter stroke on the crank and longer rod.

Mine is a 3.750" stroke. Yours should be the same. It's made for a 5.4/5.8 which has a longer stroke. I want to say 4.165" but I'm not sure.

All the parts are high quality as is usual from FRPP.
