Blew up the stock 3v ... New Build Thread

EDIT: Quick Links:

Day 1 - Beginning of old engine removal
Day 2 - Photos of big holes in each side of the block

========================================================================================================
Original Post:
Blew the motor today...

5th gear (5spd trans) WOT, around 4000-5000 RPM I would guess (140mph with 3.73 gears). Sounded like I drove over some gravel, and then white smoke everywhere with no power.

Towed to the house, waiting for the brother's '63 Catalina to get her heart back in her, then I'll be pulling mine.

Going on a week-long trip, and I'll be taking the truck, so plenty of time to think about what to do next. Probably going to "budget build" a 4.6 3v with forged internals. Last I looked (it's been a while), there were some good looking forged motors for sale here, so I might go that route too.

I had a GT450 supercharger kit on stock internals, it was 465whp and 455wtq at 12psi before cams and a better tune, and 14-15psi, so I'm guessing it was much closer to (if not over) 500whp.

If you're wondering, DON'T do that. Forged internals are definitely required for above 450, IMO.

FWIW, I made it about 30k miles before it blew, and I'm not easy on it, by any stretch of the imagination. Car has 86318 miles on it today.

Pics to follow along the way, but this (unfortunately) won't be a "Look at this crazy awesome ridiculous motor for 2000whp!" kind of progress thread. I'm just a poor kid with an expensive hobby.

Thanks for reading.

Yeah, I definitely knew I was pushing my luck.

I was planning on replacing the internals in a month or two. This just kind of expedites the process, haha.

Also, the much more expensive route, as now I have to replace a lot more than Pistons/Rods/Bearings.

Live and Learn.

Sorry to hear she let go... BruceH has a nice used forged motor for sale. I think he will sell it as a shortblock or as a longblock.

Sorry to hear that, time for bigger and better; at least it wasn't WOT box related....or....was it?

Nope, I was going to install the WOT box this weekend. It definitely wouldn't have survived many no-lift-shifts, or 2-step launches though; not because of the WOT box, but because I definitely had too much power on stock rods.

I will, however, put the WOT box in for the new motor! It has cool features.

I'm hoping to build a strong enough motor that it will hold 550whp, but I guess you really never know what a motor will do until it pops.

Just after some preliminary research, I'm thinking

stock 4.6L block (found one local)
manley rods and 19cc dished pistons (forged) (found local)
stock crank
stock heads (hopefully mine are okay and can just be machined)
billet gear oil pump

Good bearings, ARP hardware, etc.

I would think that will hold 550whp, but I'm really just guessing.

Haha, I was burying the speedo. Wish she would have held on another 5mph. I was so close!

The better rule is, forge the bottom end when you can do it for $1000 instead of blowing the motor and increasing that matter.

Shit, the tow was almost $100. That's already a tenth of the cost of forging the bottom end.

Bruce's motor has already held 700hp which is far past your goals. It will also be cheaper than buying and building your own motor. And a cursory look at your list I see 19cc dished pistons which will yield horribly low compression. It will be a complete dog with those pistons.

I went the opposite direction and put together a motor with slightly higher than stock compression. I'm making 568hp with only 11 lbs of boost.

Yeah I thought 19cc sounded too deep.

Thanks for the info. I'm really just trying to gather as much info as possible right now. It'll be a while before I'm back home to pull the motor and stuff, so I'm not in a rush to do anything.

I wouldn't go any deeper than 6cc pistons. These mod motors love compression and you lose too much performance using the old school low compression style build.

Buy BruceH's motor. Assembled long block ready for a new life and it sounds like your habits would mat perfectly with this engine.
