A question for you earl, What if someone doesn't have access to a lot of the precision tools used to measure the clearances?
You can use plastigauge, it's not quite as accurate but it will get you in the safe area. I would recommend getting a set of micrometers though, they aren't that expensive anymore and you can always use them if you mess around with cars.

In the old days I built many an engine with plastigauge. Back then micrometers were very expensive

Got alot done tonight... ready to drop the tranny and pull the motor :)

The intake manifold was full of oil. ..pulled the valve covers and the valvetrain is intact so thats a plus. All the intake valves were still visible. Heres a few pics

Not bad at all for 3 hrs, but no need to drop the tranny or remove the hood to take the engine out.

How big of a pita is it to get out without dropping the tranny? Hood is off for the added room

Its not, its easier. I did it in my garage a couple of times. Just remove the radiator and you have all the room in the world.

Just leave the tranny sitting in the cross memeber or pull it out with the motor? Thanks for the pictures guys... I know I can do it either just obviously looking for the easiest route.

i used a 2x4 and ran two tranny bolts through it to hold the tranny up after i pulled the engine. run it across the front of the bell housing and support it on the frame down in the empty engine bay. (i can take a pic tonight if that would help) and taking the fan/radiator off i feel is a lot better, lots more room for the 10 minutes it takes to remove it. i also removed my hood. its another thing that takes 5 min to remove and its completely out of the way.
