The FD investigator and the insurance investigator both said the fire started in the air compressor. The rear passenger corner of the car was closest to the fire and the bumper cover looked a little bit warped so that's getting replaced and the car will be detailed and treated with ozone to remove the smell. The garage will be gutted and cleaned an re drywalled. The carpets in the house is being replaced and everything in it removed and cleaned. Walls & ceilings throughout the house will be cleaned and painted. Other little things too... Everyone is safe (wife & pups) just lots of work and hassle.

The compressor/fire hazard is why I ALWAYS kill the breaker for it when I'm not running it. A friend of mine got me in the habit. I would be absolutely sick if my pups got hurt because I left the compressor on, it caught fire and I wasn't home to save them. I don't care if I loose everything I own, that's what insurance is for. But nothing will ever replace the pups.........and the wife I guess.

Correct me if I'm wrong but this is part of the reason we have circuit breakers.

Just being plugged in is really not a risk unless your dealing with exposed wiring. What creates the problem is when your pulling power through too small of wire. Wire is only rated for a certain amperage, if you pull more than what it's rated (gauge and length) , the wire gets hot, sometimes hot enough to melt. If everything is grounded correctly, any short should trip your breaker. If your ground tab is broken or not wired correctly or it starts the fire before tripping the breaker, then the breaker won't help.

Yep, and while stuff is UL certified and goes through testing so it can be sold here. That being said, it can and does happen.
