Rear end housing Bushing removal question

Does anyone known how to remove the housing bushing from the rear end of a 2007 mustang Gt ? Is there a tool for this job or am I just suppose to drill the rubber out ? I'm trying to replace the upper control arm and bushings, thanks for any help anyone can give. Oh and let me say car maintenance SUCKS !

You drill the rubber out clean and install the new urethane bushing in the shell.
It helps to make press tool out of a long bolt and a hole saw or big washer about the side of the shell to squeeze the new bushing in there.

I used a hole saw piece that was just a bit smaller than the inside of the shell on each side.

It is not an easy or straight forward job.

I drilled out the rubber and kind of walked the drill around the circumference of the bushing.
I used a spherical bearing type so I had to get the shell out as well. For the shell, I cut a groove in it with a hack saw and hammered it out with a hammer and chisel. I tried rigging something up with my ball joint press but it didn't work out.

With the proper tools it took me less than 30 minutes with it in the car. I removed the whole bushing and went with a solid piece.

When I do these I drill the rubber out, which rarely comes out clean, and the use a 3M hub cleaning kit to clean the excess rubber. You will go through a few purple disc's because it really wasn't designed to work sideways, but it does a great job. The link is to show you what to get / what I use. Wanted to be sure that it'll work on a Ford 8.8" rear axle bushing before I get 1 since the description says it's for GM upper\lower A-arm bushings. Had assumed that this is the 1 you used since you posted the link to it but you know the old saying about assuming...…………………….

I've already replaced mine by cutting out\replacing the innards w\ rear end in the car but don't want to go that route again as I want to use the UCA axle bushing for a 07-12 GT500 going forward, thus my interest in this tool...……...………..

I have the bushing removal tools, as part of a kit with other rear main removers/installers (which I 'rent-out'). Personally, I've never used the rear bushing remover, but instead, have drilled out the old bushing using a hole saw bit in a drill, then a small coping saw blade to cut it through as needed (since the hole saw wasn't deep enough), then a round big/thick wire brush in the drill to clean out the remnants when the center part was removed. Replacement was a 2-piece prothane bushing, much easier to install than the factory type.

Ok. I replaced mine w\ the BMR equivalent......it was a royal pain to get it to go inside the shell. Ended up having to take my Dremel & shave approx. 1\32" off the outer dia to get it to go into the sleeve....even after applying a LOT of PTFE grease on it didn't help much as it was so tight fitting. Was done w\ this method of replacement thus was wanting to get the tools to press out\in a whole bushing.
Ford Rotunda shows to make a tool specifically for this bushing but it wasn't listed on their web site & couldn't find it anywhere (the Ford tool is designed to maintain the necessary 12mm offset from bushing flange to axle housing when tool was fully run in) so was curious about the tool jewc75 linked to.

Just checked up on the Prothane 2-piece rear axle bushing insert.....that appears to be easier to install than the BMR one......
May consider using it next time but it also looks like this tool can make even installing these inserts into the existing shell easier...…..

Gonna look into it...…….………….

I have never used the tool for the insert. Ive only used it when doing the whole piece, usually a solid bushing.

FYI...…………………..

I finally thought to get the Rotunda tool part numbers shown in the FWM for the R\R of the rear axle UCA bushing then search using them on Ford's Rotunda Tool web site & found the Rear Axle UCA Bushing tool kit as follows (a 3-piece kit):

205-813...Forcing screw assembly & Install Sleeve Adapter @ $342.67
204-590...Removal/Installer Adapters (parts that apply direct force to the outer sleeve of bushing..2 pc) @ $95.00
204-034...Removal Sleeve Adapter @ $69.33

Grand Total @ $507.00 for the full kit

This tool is a hefty piece of kit so it's not cheap for a DIY'er but it does make this job a very easy 1 to do w\ axle still in the car.

I'm gonna go by the local Ford dealer here in town to see if they could get me a kit for a discounted price (I know several of the Parts Counter personnel & the Shop Manager very well & have received jobber's discounts on parts since I own both a Mustang & a MKS)………..

Hey I appreciate the offer to rent them out but I live in the 4 Corners area of New Mexico (Farmington to be exact) so it'd be a little awkward to do so at this time. I'm in no rush to do any of this at the moment as the BMR unit is holding up very nicely but if it comes to this I can probably get w\ my local Ford dealership & "borrow" their set as well (I know a few of the folks who work there, 1 of them is the Maintenance Shop Manager...).

Went by the local Ford dealership today to inquire into getting a set of these for myself & when they checked Rotunda they only found the parts 204-590 were available....205-813 & 204-034 were showing as unavailable. They noted that they were available in the full Rotunda Tool Set that you have but I would need to take out a mortgage or a home equity loan to acquire that! :jawdrop: :Big Laugh:

I would surmise that you're a very popular dude in the Mustang crowd in your neighborhood & I'll bet that kit has paid for itself many times over! :beer: :happythumbs:

1 of my buddies who works there is gonna get w\ their Parts Manager Monday morning to see if they can pull some strings for me thru the secret Ford channels to locate the so-called "unavailable" parts & also see if they can get all this at a discounted price. While there I also had them check to see if there was a different rear axle bushing listed for a 07-12 GT500 vs a GT but they both use the same part number so same bushing.

I have looked at that Prothane Urethane bushing kit & I do like it's design far better than the BMR one that I have currently installed so I'll put that 1 on my alternative list should I need to do this again in the near future.

I was in this position at one time putting my BMR bushing in. Could not force it in there.




I found out something pretty amazing though. If I remember correctly I think I solved this issue by inserting the bushing from the other side. I think it was 10 times easier. I actually like the design as the actual bushing expands when you torque it down. Here is what I put together to press the bushing into the sleeve. I think I had two different length bolts. One to get her started and the other to get it all the way in but in hindsight the longer one with more threads would have worked.
