My 4.6 forged build

well as the title says, it's about that time to prepare for boost and such so now was the time to start a build. I lucked out in getting a complete motor from a friend for the trade of a radiator for a corvette. however as it's still a score the engine lost oil pressure and damaged the cam journals of the heads. Everything else checked out though and was alright, even though it will not be used. So far I have the block tore down, completely deburred. As far as parts, well I went with CP Saleen pistons, Cobra crank, Boss 302 rods, and ARP main studs. the stock pile is getting better and I'm excited!

yeah it was a trade I couldn't pass up, what makes it sweeter is the radiator was given to me lol. So basically the complete motor was free! Yes, I have a stock pile in my room! It gets bigger and bigger each week.

It should be a good motor. FYI the saleen pistons need a bore of 3.554". Have you checked the bore of your block to make sure it has enough left to clean up to 3.554"?

This is exactly why I bought them :) I had it to the bare block before I ordered anything. There is plenty of meat left for a clean up hone to fit. Believe it or not with 89k the bores were still square and cross hatch still shown. Cylinder 6 was a little off, but nothing the honing won't take care of. All checked with the handy dial bore gauge if anyone must ask lol

Sounds good. I built my first mod motor with a set of those pistons. With stock heads they are right around 9.4-9.5 compression. IMO they are well made and worth the price.

How did the stock crank look from the donor motor? I realize you are using a Cobra but I am in the market for stock 4.6 cranks.

I agree, their nice pistons.

the stock crank was actually turned .010 for a bottom end rebuild right before I got it. It's in like new condition. honestly if I were going to use the stock crank I would probably clean it up and put it right back in.

Instead of trying to explain here is a picture, literally all it needs is a good cleaning before installation. The typical love a crank gets before being dropped in lol..

Awesome, you just potentially saved me from buying a set of pistons.


lol why's that? I just figured out I barely have enough material to have a decent clean up hone and .002 of clearance. so it might be cutting it close like me man.

What are those boss rods supposed to hold and cost?

I am not honestly sure on a "safe point" but I have seen them hold 650+ all day at 8,000rpm. Even seen a few with 800+ and never have a problem with them. And I can't find the page, but there was a guy that was pushing almost 1000hp with them and their still together. So that's why I am pretty confident in using them. Remember though Manley rates their rods only to 750hp and you see them being pushed to a 1000 all the time. As for cost, they cost me $169.65 to be shipped to my door

Everything I heard about those pistons is that you need either a new or low mileage block, so I just assumed I'd have to buy .20 over pistons. (Upping the compression to 12:1 would have been cool though)

Which is true, but I am still skimming the water on knowing or not if these will work, if my math is right and my dial bore gauge is accurate to what I measured yesterday, I should have about .003-.004 of material to be removed which is plenty to clean up and size the pistons. If my machine shop doesn't like it, well then I might be looking for other pistons. Hopefully that's not the case.

alright everything is ready to go to the machine shop.. except! not having new side bolts, I planned to order them the day my account info was stolen and the bank froze my account and which I still don't have a bank card to order anything. I am suppose to take my stuff to the machine shop today, I still don't have bolts. Are they absolutely needed for main boring? I am pretty positive they aren't but I could be wrong.
