Are you concerned about the leaded portion screwing with your sensors and plugs?

Nope.. Just here they have lower ethanol content in seasonal periods. Winter all we have is 70. I tested yesterday and they already changed from close to 80 to just above 70

Also nice you are gettin 85 Billy..

I want to say we keep it all year here IIRC. I check before I fill my jugs though. The day it is not 85% I will call the fuel company.

Well, first the good news.

Car ran fast as hell at the track yesterday! Several new PBs.

Best times were.

60 ft 1.39
1/8 5.94 at 117
1/4 9.38 at 145
1/4 9.40 at 146

Best runs below.

Now the bad news.

I hurt the motor. Later after those runs above I made a pass with only 3/8 of a tank of fuel in the car (that I think was on the pass. side) and starved the motor on the big end. Car pulled a 1.39 60 ft and a 5.94 1/8 mile at 117 mph and nosed over some on the top end so I backed out of the gas just as my warning lights came on, meaning I was below 39 psi at 24.9 psi of boost. I went back to the pits and fueled the car and all seemed well. I should have pulled the plugs though since I starved the motor for fuel. Next pass out, same 60 ft and 1/8 mile and then just past the 1000' mark the smoke came out the pipes., I need to pull the motor later and see what the damage is for sure though. Since the plugs where melted across the board, 1,2 5,8, I am assuming my diagnoses is correct.

I know this for now. The car was low on fuel, I have 4 melted plugs and oil in several cylinders.

Very stupid mistake since I am the one who is always reminding people about the pass side tank issue on these cars when changing out fuels and running with the tank low at the track. Hell last week at RPR I even pulled the pass side senor and removed the fuel on that side just to be sure of how much fuel was where. I really want to half the tank or add a fuel cell this winter so this can never happen again. For now I will fix it and run no less then 3/4 tank at the track so I know the pump will always have fuel.

Sometimes you just forget. Good thing you are taking the engine out for inspection.

All the best to you

Oh man, sorry to hear about this. Add a fuel cell or take the weight penalty and just race with a full tank.

Wow, that sux.

I was always under the impression that with a return system that the DS of the tank filled up first. That is where the fuel returns to and what fills up first when you fill the tank through the filler. What am I missing? I may be playing with fire and not know it.

If you use the fuel up to fast the pass side does not have time to siphon over and the gauge will fool you. Its the same as if you have around 3/4 of a tank of fuel and you drain the tank at the front of the fuel rail. The fuel is pumped out of the drivers side of the tank faster then the siphon can move the fuel from the pass side and the car will still show fuel on the gauge when there is nothing in the drivers side where the pump is. Just like is you siphon tube is disconnected. How many times have you seen people run out of gas and the gauge still reads 3/8 of a tank? No fuel in drivers side and fuel sitting in the pass side equals 3/8 of a tank.

I wonder if I disconnect the pass side sensor if it will give me a true reading of the drivers side only? Just a thought...

Man, that sucks. But you ran a 5 sec 1/8th though which is very stout! I ended up putting a fuel cell in mine, because I didn't want fuel supply issues from the split tank.

I'm not sure how the fuel level sender circuit is wired or how the computer receives inputs from the senders, but I would think it would need both readings to give an accurate reading.

You might be able to get an autometer fuel level gauge and use the driver side sender to monitor fuel level. You would need to figure out the range of the resistance (ohms) of the sender when empty and full.

Good idea above.
One thing I see is the faster you go the more compromise you have.

I hated to see all of the smoke on the big end as I was just behind you getting ready for a pass. It was so far down the track that it looked like a fire and they were rushing to you.

The bright side; you didn't window the block or anything of the such. During tear down it might not be so bad afterall but won't know exactly until then. Get to wrenching

There is a section in the service manual about the fuel level senders. It’s a lot more complicated than you would think how they work together. I couldn’t possibly explain it correctly without just copying it.

Take a look at the manual. You may be able to trick it, but it will be tricky.

I felt bad for your mom, she was a little upset when she came to the pits and thought I was on fire at the end of the track and didn't realize it was me standing there. She said "that guy you were racing is on fire" !

Haha racing terrifies her due to her seeing her father in a bad wreck many years ago. I guess I'm evil for picking this hobby up as it stresses her out

Here is the run where I lifted because of low fuel psi on the top end.

Here is the next one where the motor went.
