If the power steering pump is flush on the shaft it is possibly out of alignment.
What is the best way to align the pulleys.

Amen brother, exactly what i said a few posts ago. the best way to align the pulleys is with the Gates laser alignment tool.

Damn...that sucks. Could have bought a 10 rib conversion for that kind of coin.

probably lol

Hell,i blew through 20 belts, bent at least 10 tensioners, had my hood repaired twice from belts hitting the underside & popping the paint off on the top side, then on the 3rd hood damage i replaced the hood with a new one & installed a alum sheild on underside, installed the thump tensioner re clocked 30% greater for tension,no problems anymore, made 300+passes.
Cost for all this info pricele$$. www.mounceracing.com

Haha, you got me on time spent for sure but I'm probably close to you on money. I was on my 3rd front cover, 13 idler pullies (Found the cheap Ford ones would break before front cover), atleast 15 belts, and 7 stock tensioners.

I did find that the Thump_rrr tensioner was by far the best improvement to my car. I would only snap a belt on rare occasions and after the automatic I had 0 problems with all of it. Ron did teach me alot about what was going on by reading his post though. It helped me tremendously by all his R&D.

Searching through my previous posts, mostly from MF, I went through no less than 78 belts, 14 stock tensioners, 1 KB super tensioner, and 6 pulleys. I even split the KB tensioner in half, seperating the arm from the base. and thats just what i documented online hahaha

me either since i dont lose belts any longer with properly aligned pulleys and the auto.

T Bird thanks for the info. Im going to check that tonight if it isnt pouring raining out. I checked my idlers and the belt was riding on or almost over the edge so we pressed the bearing a little deeper and now its almost an 1/8th of an inch inside from the edge. I know you mentioned not to worry about smooth pulley alignment but this was before i saw that and it jsut looked like trouble.

born to run,

I checked out your site. Nice setup on the car. I know it says stock 281 but im assuming you have the bottom end built. If not those are some good times you are running on stock bottom end horsepower limitations.

no problem. Id invest in that Gates tool. Even if you only use it once it pays for itself in shredded belts almost immediately. And if you really dont need it theres plenty of people that do so you could sell ti when you were done.

Id also get a thumpRRR tensioner for good measure. You dont want to rip the arm from the base of the tensioner, or worse.

My first order of business is to check alignment. However if i do go with the THUMP does anyone have the specific part number i would need? I see he has a bunch of models on there. Am i looking for one iwth a 100mm pulley or the regular 76? Also would i have to get a new belt or will it still use the same size gates belt i have now?

see what size pulley you have on your current tensioner and order the thump with the same size pulley then you can use the same belt.

After dealing with Peter from Thump RRR, I would highly recommend them and know that they will back you if anything would happen which I don't think anyone has had one fail yet.

Excellent numbers. It gives me hope i can turn this thing up a little bit on the stock bottom end and still be ok.

I run a 12 lb pulley, with 20 & 25 degrees of timing (locked), 11.5-1 AFR,always run 103-109 unleaded fuel,i melt 20+ lbs of ice per pass in my intercooler tank,& i launch at 3000 rpm & shift @ 6000 rpm.Don't over rev the stock long block & don't bounce off or hit the rev limiter & you will be fine.Good Luck.
I will be in NJ for the NMRA event at Atco, are you going?

+1 on their customer service. I never have a problem spending top dollar as long as their quality and customer service is top notch. I assure you that their piece is worth the extra money

Yeah i run a conservative AFR and hit that 6000 also. I was always told a tune will help preserve the motor but the RPM's is what will really kill it when you push a lot of power.

When is the Atoc NMRA event. Didnt have plans on going but now i might try to fit that into my schedule.

Thats a fact, well over 1000. No one spent more time and money on the issue than I have.
I have you beat by about $2500. Doh!

I designed and made my own 10 rib kit tho. I think I'm on gen. 5 now.

I feel like the guy on the right.:asshat:

Keep in mind I am still in prototype. The plate is not nearly finished. I left it extra big and made lost of mounting holes so I have multiple belt options to test. Once I get the geometry where I want it the plate will be milled out to look real nice and tidy. The final plate design will be quite different in execution. This one works, it just needs to be made to look nice.

Yes, I made the replacement snout. That was a PITA!
