Literally just got a call from the machine shop, said the heads looked okay. But the exhaust guides needed replaced, said they have a hard time getting them out on these specific heads. Hopefully they can pull it off and get new ones in it. If not I have no clue what to do.

Trying to avoid that route if possible, if you have followed this build, I am already on the second set of heads. These being from a 5.4 3v, the previous heads that came with the motor had damaged cam journals and are pretty much useless. Their sitting in the shop collecting dust, I wish I had the time and money to develop a way to put bearings in them and solve one of Fords biggest issues with these type of heads. I don't know why they didn't put a bearing in it in the first place. easier to replace 5 sets of bearings and polish a cam than it is an entire head or in most cases a set.

dang. I had a bad run with my heads also. I had 13 bent valves so I had them replace and all valve guides and and valves.

well luckily I didn't have any bent valves lol, I do have an extra set if that were the case, my head guy in the machine shop I go to though has seen and I have seen many aluminum castings gull up when trying to remove/install seats. I haven't heard any bad news since this morning so I assume everything is going good. I just hope he gets them out alright, after that I will quit worrying. The intake side of things he said were fine.

Update: good news, they called said all the guides came out clean, bad news is they won't have replacement guides in until early next week so another week without heads to finish this build. I am beginning to hate waiting lol

There is already a way to do this we have a local machine shop in Houston, Tx (Westside Machine) that does them all the time in 2V 3V and 4V heads.

Mill the caps and rehone. No different than mains or a connecting rod.

That's what I figured, but no one around here does that kind of stuff that small, or is willing to do it, believe me I asked. In that case anyone want to buy a set of heads since you know what to do with them lol

Update: Got my heads from the machine shop yesterday evening, was so excited! Heads shaved .015", valve job (both valves and seats), and new exhaust guides. Ordered freeze plugs from Tasca, but I guess they had to special order them, so another 5-10 days and then shipped to me. I hope it's sooner than that, I was hoping to get them done and on the block this weekend.

I know how much waiting sucks! Hopefully they'll arrive sooner than they quoted, that happened with some of the stuff I ordered over the past couple months, also had stuff take 10x longer than quoted, lol!

I will be highly irritated to say the least. I have everything to get it all back together and I'm waiting on freeze plugs haha, my luck. Yeah that's true, I can at least get the valves lapped in and marked accordingly and clean everything up.

Tigged a 1/4" 6060 plate to the belt tensioner, was it needed? Who knows, does it look cool hell yeah! Soda blasted it and painted it wrinkle black. Came out pretty good I say!

In spare time I got my adapter painted in wrinkle black and cured in the oven (outside) not not the house oven. got it on along with the oil pressure sensor, and plugged off the hole I'll use for the turbo oil feed. its left loose, to put in a fitting for when I go to prime the engine.
